Cannot Be Started Due To The Following Error: Cannot Start Service On Computer
a service from PS but I doesn't seem to get it to work. I keep getting an strange cannot open service on computer '.' access is denied c# error message about not being able to open(?) the service I'm trying to stop. First I check for the service: PS C:\Users\Teletha> get-service adobe* Status Name DisplayName ------ ---- service cannot be stopped due to the following error ----------- Running AdobeARMservice Adobe Acrobat Update Service
So there is a service with that name. But when I try to stop it: PS C:\Users\Teletha> Stop-Service -Name AdobeARMservice Stop-Service : Service 'Adobe Acrobat Update Service (AdobeARMservice)' cannot be stopped due to the following error: C annot open AdobeARMservice service on computer '.'. Have you tried right-clicking and running PowerShell "As and Administrator" and then attempting to stop the service? Stupid is avoid asking" I'm pretty new on Windows System Administrator (just 3/4 months) and recently i started working on powershell 2.0. I'm administering a set of windows services, one of them is going to try to execute a "Start-Service" command as part of a powershell script. This windows service is running http://serverfault.com/questions/225130/running-a-script-as-administrator-without-login-as-administrator under a domain account "ATG\Boot" as part of administrators group. But, Start-Service/Stop-Service always fails for this reason: Stop-Service : Service 'SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER) (ReportServer)' cannot be stopped due to the follow ing error: Cannot open ReportServer service on computer '.'. At line:1 char:13 + Stop-Service <<<< Report + CategoryInfo : CloseError: (System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController:ServiceController) [Stop-Service], ServiceCommandException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : CouldNotStopService,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.StopServiceCommand This error is reproduced when i execute script from shell, but works properly when i run script with "Run as administrator" option. I would like to empathize that user is part of local administrators group. You probably have to have you script elevate itself. This probably means that your script will display a UAC prompt. This was the first search hit for 'powershell uac prompt'. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1566969/showing-the-uac-prompt-in-powershell-if-the-action-requires-elevation share|improve this answer answered Jan 21 '11 at 16:56 Zoredache 94.7k22184317 That worked fine... thanks –NAADEV Jan 25 '11 at 11:08 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote Here's a script I use to stop SQL Server service. My main aim is to persuade people to follow my https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/579152-cannot-run-task-scheduler lead - abandon VBScript and take-up PowerShell. My secondary objective is to remind you that PowerShell has more verbs than just 'Get'; in this ezine we will employ, Set, Start, Stop and Restart. One minor learning point, once you seek more active commands than 'get', you will need to click 'Run as Administrator' before you launch PowerShell ISE. cannot be Topics for PowerShell Set-Service This Week's Secret This Week's Mission To Control Windows Services with PowerShell Adjust the Startup Value with Set-Service Stopping and Starting Services ♣ This Week's Secret As you may already know, I have a phobia of anti-virus software; whilst troubleshooting a colleague's machine I could not turn off the AVG program. Then I remembered Windows Services. Lo-and-behold, this program had installed itself as a service, and was with due to the great joy that I used a PowerShell command to disable it. I could have used the operating system's services GUI, but scripting was a calming antidote to my anger with a tricky problem. This Week's Mission To Control Windows Services with PowerShell My main mission this week is to lure people away from VBScript and tempt them to use PowerShell instead. Once I decided to abandon VBScript and take-up PowerShell I have never looked back. However, I admit that I was never a VB or ASP developer, just a dabbler in VBScript for logon scripts and related tasks. As a vehicle for our mission I have chosen Windows Services because they are particularly suitable for my secondary agenda, which is to introduce more PowerShell verbs, for example, set, start, stop or restart-service. Start the task scheduler service and try again.'? When I try to run Task Scheduler, I get an error 'The remote computer was not found.' and even when I attempt to force a connection to my computer (because no computer is connected when Task Scheduler starts), I cannot run Disk Defrag. Another oddity that may or may not be related is when I view the Local Admins of the computer, it's blank. However, if I try to add someone who is already a Local Admin, it says they are already an admin. Here is what I've tried so far to no avail:-Ran msconfig with Selective Services Hiding Microsoft Items -Ran Normal Configuration -Checked HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\services\Schedule; Start=2 -Ran sfc /scannnow -Checked HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\RPC\INTERNET to delete the INTERNET folder but it did not exist. -Open services and try to start the Task Scheduler Manually. It says starting the stops right away. -Logged onto the computer for the first time so I had a new profile to test with. -Open an elevated Command Prompt by right-clicking on CMD.EXE shortcut in your start menu and selecting Run As Administrator from the context menu. Type the following commands: Code: REG EXPORT HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule %TEMP%\Schedule.reg REG ADD HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Schedule /F /V Start /T REG_DWORD /D 2 Reboot the computer. -Run Windows 7 repair disk Any thoughts would be appreciated. :) Reply Subscribe RELATED TOPICS: A task in Task Scheduler only runs the .exe it calls if I right click & Run Weird Task Scheduler issue Task Scheduler alternatives   7 Replies Sonora OP YodaPop Sep 8, 2014 at 11:43 UTC 1st Post You can check the dependencies of the Task Scheduler event by opening the Services console. Right-click on the Task Scheduler service and select "Properties". Go to the "Dependencies" tab. Expand all of the dependencies in the list. Make sure all of the dependencies are running first. Hopefully that will help. 2 Pimiento OP Kacy8696 Sep 9, 2014 at 2:44 UTC I checked the Task Scheduler Properties and it showed the same dependencies listed above.
