This maddening Windows XP error is likely the result of some behind-the-scenes access of your USB drive."When I try to disconnect a flash drive or external drive, about 50% of the time I get the message, 'generic volume cannot be stopped at this time.' Usually I just leave it in, and eventually I can disconnect, or if I have to, I showbox has stopped error turn the computer off." I assume you mean you receive that error when you attempt to use Windows' Safely Remove Hardware option, which is indeed the right step to take before unplugging any USB drive. So, why won't Windows let you remove your drive? Snarky answer: Because it's not a very smart operating system. Useful answer: Because some file, program, or system operation is accessing the drive--and removing it could cause problems. For starters, close any Explorer windows that might be open. Even if they're not showing the drive's contents, they may be "looking" at the drive. Likewise, close any programs that might be accessing files or folders on the drive. For example, if you have a Word document that resides on the drive and that file is open in Word, close it--along with Word itself. Where this gets tricky is with programs that might be accessing your drive without your knowledge. For example, maybe your anti-virus utility is scanning or monitoring the drive. That would make "safe removal" nearly impossible. (Aha! Another reason to avoid security software altogether.) If indeed

Generic volume, Unlocker, USB drive When you try to unplug your USB drive, you may have a chance of getting “The device ‘Generic volume’ cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later” warning. This warning can be irritating. Why am I getting this warning or error? You are getting this error because the programs you open from your USB drive are still running in the background or Antivirus in your computer is still monitoring your USB drive. What I have to do now to avoid this warning? 1. Try to close all the programs you open from your USB drive and then try stopping your USB drive. 2. The best way to fix this warning is to use Unlocker . Right click on USB drive in My Computer and select Unlocker, Unlokcer shows you which files or programs are still using the memory, kill those processes and unplug your USB drive. 3. Another fix to this is, shut down your Computer and remove your USB drive. Have you know another way to fix this problem? It will search all the handles opened for your drive. You can select and close all the handles and then again try removing the drive. Reply Venkat May 18, 2010 @ 7:49 pm @Jamal Khan If it worked you, you can use that method but using unlocker seems the easier option than the process you mentioned any way thanks for letting me know about this. Reply Jamal Khan May 19, 2010 @ 9:37 am I just wrote because process explorer is provided by Microsoft and you don't need to kill a process, you can just close the handle. Reply maddie January 28, 2011 @ 11:58 am The best way to use unlocker. Just download it from net it's a freeware and use it. It's also helpful in other troubles. Rep
