The camera says to turn it off and then on and reinstall the battery. I did this, canon eos 30d specs but it doesn't work. Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it? Your removal of the battery was a good first thing to try. I'll have you re-do it here for the sake of going in order below 1. Turn off the camera.2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.Does error 99 still appear? Please proceed with the following steps.6. Format the CF card in the camera. This will erase all data on the card so please be sure to save the images first.7. Also, please attempt the use of a new card properly formatted in the camera.8. Clean the lens contacts by gently cleaning then with a new, soft, micro fiber cloth. If possible, please attempt the use of a different Canon lens on the camera.9. Turn on

ERR99: The dread of every photographer! No error on any camera is as dreaded as Error 99. If you shoot Canon and haven't seen it yet, you will. Canons certainly aren't any more prone to errors than any other camera brand, but they are a bit notorious for the infamous Error 99. Learn how to fix it now so when it happens, you aren't stuck shooting a wedding without a working camera! In short, ERR99 on your Canon camera is simply a general error. What error, you ask? That is the difficulty with troubleshooting the famous ERR99. Since it is a general error, it gives you nothing to begin with. Yes No Voted Undo Score 5 Cancel Comments: May be a bit late but I have just bought a 300d spares or repair so I could fix my own one.The one I bought for spares was doing the err 99 thing.I could hear that the shutter was not opening so took the lens off and took a look inside to discover that the soft shutter material was kinked in one corner.I then carefully using a canon eos 30d cotton bud (Q-TIP) gave it a bit of a nudge in the corner and to my pleasure it slotted back in camera fixed.. Hope that has helped somebody. 11/06/2014 by steve My eos 300d, that I bought to fix, would go in to rapid fire mode until I took the battery off. I ended up opening the camera and removing the shutter curtains (I think they were jamming or failed in some form) now the camera works fine and takes a picture. The lack of shutter curtains doesn't bother me much as I only use the camera for long exposure astrophotography. Not bad for £20. 11/07/2014 by challenger3000 Thanks to the comments posted here, I found a dog hair from our bassett had managed to jam the shutter. Removed the dog hair, put the bassett down, problem solved!!!! 01/22/2015 by Paul Henderson i have cannon 300d... all things are ok... but when i press the click button error 99 shown on the screen but the picture is taken in the gallery... Thanks Jim Sponsored Links Dec 25, 2007, 4:00 PM #2 hgernhardtjr Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Posts: 516 Firs thing to do is ensure the lens and camera contacts are clean ... I gently use an eraser such as those on the end of a "stick" pen (or a pencil if no stick pen is available ... the stick pen eraser is a bit rougher). The few times this has occurred for me was with oxidized contacts on a non-Canon lens. Never had problems with my Canon lenses, though. After that, well ... perhaps someone else has a suggestion ... Dec 25, 2007, 5:36 PM #3 nymphetamine Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2005 Posts: 1,105 err 99 is generic error message that the canon software doesnt handle inside the camera Simple reasons could be as one of the member suggested bad lens contacts or Bad CF cards(Try a new CF card) or bad batteries. Try a different lens and clean the contact points in camera too. Try a new CF card, Try a new battery Serious reasons could be related to Shutter mechanism. I have had that problem. If the camera is within the warranty period the shutter assembly is usually replaced Hope this helps. It's not the lens for sure, although some lenses may draw more power than others... Like nymphetamine said, Err99 is a general fault and usually occurs with a "weak" battery. A freshly charged battery can still not provide enough "oomph" i.e. current when it is old hence the processor inside the camera encounters a general fault (equivalent of a blue PC screen) -> Replacing the battery with a new one (or higher rating) usually so
