Make sure there is no paper inside the machine and that the cartridges are inserted correctly. If there is no paper or little bits of paper, the carriage may need replaced. You can also try to reset the printer and it may clear the error and let you print again, but if the carriage is bad you will get the error again. You can reset the printer by doing the following steps:* Turn off the Printers .* Hold button Resume/Cancel (red triangle in the circle), click on POWER – an indicator light green.* Release the button Resume / Cancel keeping POWER.* Click Resume/Cancel 2 times, keeping POWER, and then release all the buttons.* When the indicator recorded GREEN – click Resume / Cancel 4 times!* Turn off the Canon Pixma MP450 Printers POWER buttonCustomer :I don't see any paper, or little bits anywhere. Fixed it right up.Thanks for the post. Reply LuisJ February 24, 2014 at 14:03 Mine was a grease smear on the clear plastic strip (encoder) behind the print head, the smear caused not to find home. I did cause the smear with my knuckles while cleaning the head cleaning squeegees by the ink dumps / head cleaning station. Reply http://www.fixkb.com/2011/06/canon-error-code-5100.html CrispinR January 14, 2015 at 12:27 After several different suggested fixes were tried including that specified above to reset the "ink absorber" and those suggested by Canon for this error message on their site, I am very happy to say that the issue turned out to be the same as set out by LuisJ who had a smear on the plastic strip. Once the strip had been cleaned the printer returned to normal. Thanks Luis for posting your findings here as it really helped me. Thanks also to Satu and to Carl Norton who gave the solution for the ink absorber. Reply Joe Kelly July 28, 2015 at 10:27 Cleaning the plastic strip cleared my problem. Thanks Reply JimC October 3, 2015 at 22:53 Thanks! It was grease on the clear plastic strip that runs behind the print heads. Now it works fine.Leave a ReplyClick here to cancel reply.Name Email (optional) Comment Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Solution 1: Look inside for a tiny object like a piece of paper, a staple... Solution 2: The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough . Lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps); this repair probably require to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism. Solution 3: Clean the timing strip: there is a thin plastic strip running across the width in front of and below the drive belt: there are fine black vertical lines on this strip. If the strip gets a piece of crud on it, you get an error during the start-up sequence.Gently clean this strip with a damp lint-free tissue. photo: (you can see a transparent horizontal strip object which controls the movement of the printer head slots.)
