Use alcohol and a swab. Hi Guys,Thanks for this forum. I had the same error - error 5100. Once I found what this error means from this forum, I started to look more http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/posts/22611 closely to find the cause. I found out, even though the lever for the catridge was locked, the catridge wasn't sitting properly in the carriage and it was hitting the side of the front cover when it moves. Pushed the catridge in place and solved the problem. Thanks for this reply above by Barry, which guided me to find out the problem. by Anonymous on Sep 13, 2006 at 7:56am Add comment Please sign in to comment thank you sooo much..because of this FREE site i have been able to fix my faithful old ip2000thank you thank yousaved me taking it to an engineer!!!!! - Anonymous hi ya it did work thks - Anonymous 0 I have cannon i455 and had that annoying error 5100. after trying everything on this forum, i just unplugged the power then replugged, then turn it on again. seems to work. by Anonymous on Oct 28, 2006 at 4:24pm Add comment Please sign in to comment 0 i have this new canon pixma ip1700 printer and i can not get it to work. i keep on getting an error message "service error 5100", can someone please help? by unknown on Dec 31, 2006 at 2:30pm Add comment Please sign in to comment 0 clean the inside a litlte, check your ink cartridges and just turn off and on :] by Anonymous on Apr 11, 2007 at 10:49am Add comment Please sign in to comment 0 I can confirm that reseating the ink carts and sliding the print head to the centre (when switched off) fixed the problem on an iP2000 when it power cycled

Basically just had to remove the piece of paper got stuck in the canon pixma printer. Reply Russ December 14, 2014 at 04:24 I also used the same method mentioned in this article, but I had to clean the clear-strip. Fixed it right up.Thanks for the post. Reply LuisJ February 24, 2014 at 14:03 Mine was a grease smear on the clear plastic strip (encoder) behind the print head, the smear caused not to find home. I did cause the smear canon pixma mp610 with my knuckles while cleaning the head cleaning squeegees by the ink dumps / head cleaning station. Reply CrispinR January 14, 2015 at 12:27 After several different suggested fixes were tried including that specified above to reset the "ink absorber" and those suggested by Canon for this error message on their site, I am very happy to say that the issue turned out to be the same as set out by LuisJ who had a smear on the plastic strip. Once the strip had been cleaned the printer returned to normal. Thanks Luis for posting your findings here as it really helped me. Thanks also to Satu and to Carl Norton who gave the solution for the ink absorber. Reply Joe Kelly July 28, 2015 at 10:27 Cleaning the plastic strip cleared my problem. Thanks Reply JimC October 3, 2015 at 22:53 Thanks! It was grease on the clear plastic strip that runs behind the print heads. Now it works fine.Leave a ReplyClick here to cancel reply.Name Email (optional) Comment Notify me of follow-up comments by email. The ink head/cartridge stays static and the error message 5100 appears on the screen. It's almost as though the belt came off the track. How do I fix this? Also this is a printer/scanner/copier - can I bypass this message so I can use this as a standalone scanner if I cannot fix it? Thank you. Update: Reseated cartridges and print head. Switched on and off but the error's back. It doesn't move back and forth on start up I still think this is some kind of belt issue.
