cause a 5100 error code. 1) The encoding strip may need cleaning. 2) There is a paper jam. 3) The printer may need to be reset by turning it on and off. 4) The ink tanks may need to be properly snapped into their carrier. 5) The printer may need service. The solutions to try1) Cleaning the encoder strip. Use a cotton swab and isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) or window cleaner. A flashlight will help you see any grease on the encoding strip. With the printer on, open the printer by lifting the scanner unit until it locks. Unplug the power cord from the printer and wait until the LEDs are no longer lit. At this point you will be able to slide the cartridge carrier back and forth. To start, slide the carrier to the right. Look for the clear plastic strip (the encoding strip) in front of the carriage drive belt and look for any grease or other dirt on the strip. Remove the grease with a cotton wab moistened with the isopropanol. Look at the strip from several angles to check for any grease along the entire strip. Make sure you do not remove the grease from the chassis (metal rail). Move the cartridge carrier to the left and check the right side of the strip. When all of the grease is removed, lift the scanner unit support and

Share this conversation Expert: Freddy M. replied6 years ago. 5100 is a carriage error and can be caused by 4 different sensors. First off the "Timing Strip" that passes through the back of the Carriage Assembly can http://www.justanswer.com/computer/345tn-canon-mx860-printer-copier-prints-successfully-pauses.html be contaminated with ink spots and this needs to be cleaned. Open the cover and use your flashlight to examine the timing strip as much as you can see. You really don't have much access to this strip unless you remove the covers,..and doing that is considerable work. The other items that can cause this error are the sensor inside the carriage unit, the drive motor for the carriage asm, and the main logic card. However, 99% of the time it is the Timing strip which is easitly contaminated with splattered ink. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Freddy M., Support Specialist Category: Computer Satisfied Customers: 18398 Experience:Years of experience in the IT field and in customer support. I cleaned two things: (1) a metal strip (guide?) that runs along the back behind the carraige. (2) a transparant plastic strip that runs above the metal guide. Which one is the timing strip? Also, what is the procedure for other mechanical repairs of this nature that I cannot do myself? I live in Sacramento California. Is there a local facility that will do such maintenance, or is it cheaper to buy a new unit? I hate to do that, as I've only owned this machine for about 4 m

When I ran into a 5100 error as soon as I turned on my new Canon Pixma MX420 printer I decided that, rather then tear my hair out, I'd try to use my frustration to help someone avoid theirs, and get to play with my new Panasonic HDC-SD90 video camera at the same time. Hope this vid helps solve your printer error problem. me a Service Error 5100. I tried 'reseting' the printer using the service mode, but nothing worked. I was wondering if anyway to fix this on my own, or do I have to bring it to a repair shop. Note: Physical damage to the printer seemed minimal.. I opened it up and the only broken parts seemed to be part of the casing. Respond to this 1 5100 is a carriage error, check the timing strip for contamination(plastic strip about 1/4" in width) The unit is not homing, check for obstructions. by unknown on Dec 23, 2004 at 5:28am Add comment Please sign in to comment I bought one right out of the box had problems. After looking for this strip I seen where it had some clear type grease on it. Once I clean it my printer worked fine. - Anonymous 1 How did you get into service mode? I need to reset my waste ink tank count. Thanks. Larry by unknown on Dec 24, 2004 at 5:00pm Add comment Please sign in to comment i hate my job - Anonymous 1 In my case my 2 year old daughter had placed a small bottle out of sight to the left of the ink cartridges. Took a while to spot but everything is hunky dory since we got the toy out of the mechanism ! 5100 therefore seems to be anything that prevents the cartridge from fully running to and fro across the page, This could be a blockage but could equally be ink on the mechanism that causes it to slip. If this dries it could account for the printing to resume without any apparent fix. by unknown on Jul 12, 2006 at 11:51am Add comment Please sign in to comment whew,,,,thanx for this..reali found it helpful....found whats blocking my printer..now its perfect again...=) for now at least...=p - unknown 1 To: sguadalajaraBrilliant advice, thank you! All test sheets print normally. I have reset, cleaned, aligned and reinstalled updated drivers on my Mac. For some reason the margins slant to the left as the document is printed. The margin starts at 2.5 cm from left hand edge of the paper and about 3/4 the way down the page it measures 1.8. So, the document appears slanted to the left. The paper is coming out parallel to the sides of the tray and does not jam. When printing jpegs the printer will print about 1/2 page and then stop and gives
