They are not indistructable but they are certainly more forgiving than a microdrive. --MikeAnd that may be true for you, but there are many others that have not had microdrive problems (and I refer only to Hitachi/IBM as all others cannot be called microdrives though they are the same form factor), I have not had a microdrive failure and all of mine are around three years old, my pro photog friend

Buy whatever is your choice, microdrive or solid state (and solid state devices can and do fail), but I think the newer generations of the microdrives are far more dependable than the early ones were. The camera cannot read the card. I tried putting the card into my laptop's card reader and it was able to read the card. I was able to pull my images off of it. I attempted http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/20916968 to put the card back into the camera -- to format it and I'm getting the same error. In searching forums, I've found similar problems but older and usually with other cameras. (I have an E-620.) Anyone have advice on how to get this card formatted and useable once again? While I had put the car back into the camera a 100 times already - I did it again and tried to format ... and it LET me! I was able to take pictures, pull them off and re-format the card again! Hooray. Wish I knew why the card flipped it's lid ... but happy I still have it. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer. In my case the camera would not allow me to get to format. It would display "Card Error" and after a few seconds show the Olympus logo, then power off the camera. I had deleted the images from the card via a card reader (SanDisk) attahced to a Windows 7 PC, so I wasn'
SanDisk Dimensions 43×36×3.3mm (Type I) 43×36×5mm (Type II) Weight 10 gram (typical) Usage Digital cameras and other mass storage devices Extended from PCMCIA / PC Card CompactFlash (CF) is a flash memory mass storage device used mainly https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CompactFlash in portable electronic devices. The format was specified and the devices were first manufactured by SanDisk in 1994.[4] CompactFlash became the most successful of the early memory card formats, surpassing Miniature Card and SmartMedia. Subsequent formats, such as MMC/SD, various Memory Stick formats, and xD-Picture Card offered stiff competition. Most of these cards are smaller than CompactFlash while offering comparable capacity and speed. Proprietary memory card formats for use in professional card error audio and video, such as P2 and SxS, are faster, but physically larger and more costly. CompactFlash remains popular and is supported by many professional devices and high end consumer devices. As of 2014, both Canon[5][6] and Nikon[7] use CompactFlash for their flagship digital still cameras. Canon also chose CompactFlash as the recording medium for its professional high-definition tapeless video cameras.[8] Ikegami professional video cameras can record digital video onto microdrives and read CompactFlash cards through an adaptor.[9] In 2008, a variant of CompactFlash, CFast was announced. CFast (also known as CompactFast) is based on the Serial ATA interface rather than the Parallel ATA interface used by the original CompactFlash cards. In November 2010, SanDisk, Sony, and Nikon presented a next generation card format to the CompactFlash Association. The new format has a similar form factor to CF/CFast but is based on the PCI Express interface instead of Parallel ATA or Serial ATA.[10][11] With potential read and write speeds of 1 Gbit/s (125 MByte/s) and storage capabilities beyond 2 TiB the new format is aimed at high-definition camcorders and high-resolution digital cameras, but the new cards are not backward compatible with either CompactFlash or CFast. The XQD card format was officially announced by the CompactFlash Association in December 2011.[12] Contents 1 Description 2 Technical details 2.1 Speed 2.1.1 Solid state 2.1.2 Magnetic media 2.2 Capacities and compatibility 2.2.1 Solid state capacities 2.2.2 Magnetic media capacities 2.2.3 Use in place of a hard disk drive 2.3 Reliability 2.3.1 File systems 2.4 CF+ and CompactFlash specification revisions 2.5 CE-ATA 2.6 CFast 2.7 Type I and Type II 2.8 Microdrives 3 Compared to other portable storage 4 Counterfeiting 5 Other devices in the CF form factor
