BIOS, and the I/O interface upon which the POST card relies are all working, a POST card can be used to monitor the system's Power-On Self Test (POST), or to diagnose problems with it. The system sends two-hexadecimal-digit codes to a specified I/O port (usually 80hex) during startup, some indicating a stage in the startup procedure, others identifying errors. The description for each code

must be looked up in a table for the particular BIOS. For example, for the 1984 IBM PC/AT code 1D is issued when about to Determine Memory Size Above 1024K, and code 2D in the event of 8042 Keyboard Controller Failure, 105 System Error. If startup does not complete successfully, either an error code, or the code of the last operation, is available. POST cards provide information even when a standard display is not available, either because connecting a monitor is impractical, or because the failure occurs before the video subsystem is operational. Operation[edit] POST cards are inserted into an expansion slot, and are available in ISA (also supporting EISA), PCI, parallel port, and other variants (Mini PCIe, for laptop computers, is supported by some cards, but with restrictions). A typical card for desktop computers has both an ISA interface on one edge, and PCI on another; a card for laptop computers has both a miniPCI and a parallel port connector (plus USB to supply power). Information on the meaning of POST codes for different BIOSes is needed to interpret the codes. This is supplied with cards, but becomes dated as late

It is easy to install, yet extremely powerful to use. card error With Debug Card in hand, you no longer have to go through tedious and time consuming process of trying to figure out what is wrong with your PC hardware. Debug Card will tell you exactly what is wrong with your PC in just seconds. It saves you time and money. Our new and improved design of Debug Card diagnostic card can card error codes work with almost all popular types of CPUs, Motherboards, and BIOSes. System Requirements The Debug Card itself only requires an empty PCI or ISA expansion slot. It is not necessary to install memory chips to perform analysis. "POST Codes" can be displayed through the hexadecimal display panel on the Debug Card itself. Debug Card INDICATORS ‘Indicators' are any light emitting diodes(LED) or hexadec imal display panel that may be mounted on an Debug Card. This section discusses the following indicators that appear on the Debug Card: l POST Code Display l PCI BUS SIGNALS LEDs POST Code Display The POST Code Display is made up of a dual, dot matrix hexadecimal read-out that displays Power On Self Test (POST) status codes. PCI Signal Definition: =>CLK -Motherboard Clock Signal. Should be on when power is supplied to the motherboard even without CPU. =>BIOS- BIOS Read Signal. Flashes when CPU reads BIOS code. =>IRDY -Device Ready. Flashes when an IRDY signal is detected. =>OSC -ISA Oscillation Indicator. Indicate ISA Oscillation Signal is available. =>FRAME- PCI Bus Frame. Should be on under norma
Card Error Codes? Discussion in 'Hardware' started by Copasta, Mar 4, 2006. Copasta Private First Class I just purchased a POST Card that you plug into the ISA or PCI slot on your motherboard to test for error codes or whether the board is good or not. Anyway, does anyone know where I can find a complete list of the error codes? One of the boards I tested came up with two different error codes which aren't listed in the code book that came with the card. At first, the error code "FF" comes up and stays on that code until I push the reset button, then it changes to "db". I don't receive any beeps or any other codes after that. Everything seems to be running (fans, lights, cd drives, HD, etc.), but I get nothing on the monitor (which was the reason for buying the POST Card!). Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! Copasta, Mar 4, 2006 #1 Yargwel MajorGeek Well look here for POST codes: http://www.bioscentral.com/postcodes/attbios.htm But from what you have described a duff graphics card would seem favourite. Take the card out the boot and see if you get POST beeps or anything else on your POST card (and I always thought that was something you sent whilst on holiday!! ) Yargwel, Mar 7, 2006 #2 (You must log in or sign up to reply here.)
