I no longer have access to the original program. The archive is Not compressed (gzip). When trying to extract the archive files, I receive an Unexpected EOF error. It's complicated, but I have reason to suspect that the only problem is with the the checksum. I want to extract it and get the files out. Is there a way (perhaps using cpio or pax), to ignore or fix the tar checksum, and extract the files? http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/96428/tar-ignore-or-fix-checksum tar data-recovery checksum cpio pax share|improve this question asked Oct 17 '13 at 4:10 Rucent88 1,1302718 Does it give you any useful output when you use tar tf backup.tar? –kurtm Oct 17 '13 at 4:13 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote I'd try the -i switch to see if you can just ignore and messages regarding EOF. -i, --ignore-zeros ignore zeroed blocks in archive (means EOF) Example $ tar xivf backup.tar share|improve this answer answered Oct 17 '13 at 4:27 slm♦ 164k40301471 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. computer's data is intact and unhampered. The data is scanned and tested for accuracy, either based on how well it relates to data elsewhere or based on previous data http://www.tech-faq.com/checksum-error.html that was stored on the same computer. Essentially, all of the bits of data in http://community.dovetail.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1083 a particular document or file are added up and a number or hash is created. This number or hash can then be compared to the number or hash generated from the same file on another person's computer or at a previous time on the same computer. When does a Checksum Error Occur? Although a checksum error can checksum error occur at any time while a computer is comparing data, it is most commonly present during a computer's startup procedure. During a computer's start up processes, the BIOS settings, which are stored in a CMOS memory chip, are computed and then checked against the previous value. If the computed values do not match exactly, the computer warns the user with a checksum error message that the data may have been changed checksum error on or corrupted between start up cycles. All BIOS programs present a different error and therefore will either continue with booting or refuse to boot until the problem is corrected. Depending on the type and the severity of the error generated, there may be one of a variety of ways to rectify the issue. The most common cause of a checksum error during the startup process is a faulty battery that is not providing sufficient power to the motherboard when the computer is off. However, motherboard malfunctions and viruses can also contribute to checksum errors. Other Types of Checksum Errors Another type of checksum error may occur with any program at any time. It is usual for many programs to now provide checksum information when that program is downloaded. Using a checksum program or MD5 hash checker, a user can quickly compare the checksum of a downloaded program with the checksum that the software developer provides. This is a common way to make sure that users are downloading the proper program and that no data was corrupted during the download process. Checksum errors originating from download errors can easily be corrected by re-downloading the problematic program. Follow Us! Rate this article: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Checksum Error, 3.44 / 5 (9 votes) Y

If you want to go on, type device/file name when readyI have tried creating a /tmp/sh directory then a /tmp/sh file - no good.my tmp directory has over 200k blocks of space.I tried repeating the process from my user directory and it also gets an out of space condition. My $HOME dir has 500K blocks of space.Any Suggestions?--------------------------------Here is where it gets even stranger. I did the above using a putty ssh session. Here is what I got when I did the install from /tmp under an OMVS shell pax: checksum error on tape (got 19c, expected 0) chmod: FSUM6180 file "./instemp/install.rexx": EDC5129I No such file or directory. ./instemp/install.rexx: ./oshxl-0.1.0.bin 107: .: FSUM7351 not found I am officially lost in the woods now. It makes me feel guilty that I just did not try hard enough to figure out a solution the first time. I was starting the installer with Code: Select all. oshxl-0.1.0.binI had also triedCode: Select all./ oshxl-0.1.0.binAfter spending time pounding away with other attempts at a solution, I finally got the command correct Code: Select all./oshxl-0.1.0.bin and all was well. What a difference a space makes.
