on a Solaris server. I run the command tar xvf 4.56_release.tar.gz But this reports the following error tar: directory checksum error Initially I thought it was a bad download so I re-downloaded the file (actually a different version) and it reports the same error. Un-compressing and un-tar'ing it on Linux on a Linux server works fine. Any ideas what I am doing wrong. linux tar share|improve this question asked Aug 19 '11 at 10:24 Shawn Vader 6,44263152 tar checksum error aix add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 26 down vote accepted The .tar.gz is the hint for what you are doing wrong - you are not uncompressing it first. If your version of tar supports it, you can use the -z flag to specify it is compressed with gzip: tar -xzvf 4.56_release.tar.gz Otherwise, you'll have to gunzip it manually: gunzip -c 4.56_release.tar.gz | tar xvf - (The reason it works on Linux is probably that is has a newer/different version which automagically detects the compression) share|improve this answer answered Aug 19 '11 at 10:33 carlpett 6,4732961 1 Thanks, the version of tar didn't support the -z but using the gunzip resolved it. –Shawn Vader Aug 19 '11 at 10:41 1 +1 for the automagically. –Florian Müller Aug 15 '13 at 9:49 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. (591) | Jul 06 at 12:46 PM When using AIX tar, the package is not able to uncompress its contents. AIX tar doesn't uncompress files with long names. To resolve the problem, use the GNU tar utility (gtar) to extract the files from the downloaded installation package. If it is not installed already on the server, you can obtain this utility from the IBM AIX Toolbox using the link below: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/power/software/aix/linux/toolbox/downlo
