The battery supplies the charge that holds the information in CMOS memory when it looses the information after shutting down the battery is too weak to maintain the information. Make sure you get the exact number replacement battery its usually a 2032 3V Lithium, you can use any brand Duracell, EverReady, Etc., just make sure the type is the same and when reinserted the writing is visable. 4Ryan6 a c 351 K Overclocking a b V Motherboard December 30, 2006 11:21:00 PM After you change the battery you'll have to reset the date and time once more but that should be the last time you'll have to do it, if not post back. hlhneast January 10, 2007 12:36:40 AM Hey not to steal your post but I also experienced this exact Checksum error on first boot after about a 5 month down time. I also had to press F1 every boot. Now the system has crashed, no POST, nothing except the lights on the CD roms blink and the HD light stays lit for about 30 seconds. Do you think the CMOS battery is the culprit? Thanks! 4Ryan6 a c 351 K Overclocking a b V Motherboard January 10, 2007 1:04:30 AM

The black screen appears when I boot up and reads: 'System BIOS shadowed. Check time and date settings. System CMOS checksum bad--default checksum error defaults configuration used.'" Robert says he's tried contacting both Phoenix Technologies (makers of the BIOS) and Emachines, and neither company could help. (The BIOS dates back to 2003, and the system itself is long out of warranty.) Fortunately, this sounds like a pretty easy problem to fix. I don't think the driver-update utility is to blame here, but rather a poorly timed CMOS-battery failure. See, most desktop motherboards have a small battery that supplies power to the BIOS even when the machine is turned off. This battery might last two years or it might last 10, but when it fails, you'll often see an error message like the one above. (Your system will also fail to keep proper time, as the clock is one of the elements powered by that battery.) Most CMOS batteries are standard CR2032 "button" cells, which cost no more than a few bucks at your local drugstore, but check your motherboard documentation just to b
