Directory Checksum Error While Untarring
I run the command tar xvf 4.56_release.tar.gz But this reports the following error tar: directory checksum error Initially I thought it was a bad download so I re-downloaded the file (actually a different version) and it reports the same error. Un-compressing and un-tar'ing it on Linux on a Linux server works fine. Any ideas what I am doing wrong. linux tar share|improve this question asked Aug 19 '11 at 10:24 Shawn Vader 6,46263152 add a comment| 1 Answer directory checksum error in unix on tar xvf 1 active oldest votes up vote 26 down vote accepted The .tar.gz is the hint for what you are doing wrong - you are not uncompressing it first. If your version of tar supports it, you can use the -z flag to specify it is compressed with gzip: tar -xzvf 4.56_release.tar.gz Otherwise, you'll have to gunzip it manually: gunzip -c 4.56_release.tar.gz | tar xvf - (The reason it works on Linux is probably that is has a newer/different version which automagically detects the compression) share|improve this answer answered Aug 19 '11 at 10:33 carlpett 6,4732961 1 Thanks, the version of tar didn't support the -z but using the gunzip resolved it. –Shawn Vader Aug 19 '11 at 10:41 1 +1 for the automagically. –Florian Müller Aug 15 '13 at 9:49 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. error Cause This error message from tar(1) indicates that the checksum of the http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7120232/untar-a-file-on-solaris-reports-tar-directory-checksum-error directory and the files it has read from tape does not match the checksum advertised in the header block. Usually this message indicates the wrong blocking factor, https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19455-01/806-1075/msgs-2104/ although it could indicate corrupt data on tape. Action To resolve this problem, make certain that the blocking factor you specify on the command line (after -b) matches the blocking factor originally specified. If in doubt, leave out the block size and let tar(1) determine it automatically. If that remedy does not help, the tape data could be corrupted. I no longer have access to the original program. The archive is Not compressed (gzip). When trying to extract the archive files, I receive an Unexpected EOF error. It's complicated, but I have reason to suspect that the only problem is with the the checksum. I want to extract it and get the files out.
