Any ideas what I am doing wrong. linux tar share|improve this question asked Aug 19 '11 at 10:24 Shawn Vader 6,46263152 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 26 down vote accepted The .tar.gz is the hint for what you are doing wrong - you are not uncompressing it first. If your version of tar supports it, you can use the -z flag to specify it is compressed with gzip: tar -xzvf 4.56_release.tar.gz Otherwise, you'll have to gunzip it manually: gunzip -c 4.56_release.tar.gz | tar xvf - (The reason it works on Linux is probably that is has a newer/different version which automagically detects the compression) share|improve this answer answered Aug 19 '11 at 10:33 carlpett 6,4732961 1 Thanks, the version of tar didn't support the -z but using the gunzip resolved it. –Shawn Vader Aug 19 '11 at 10:41 1 +1 for the automagically. –Florian Müller Aug 15 '13 at 9:49 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agre

You need to either use a version of tar that accepts the -z flag or use gunzip on it before untarring. I then ftp'd it over to my Solaris 8 Intel system in binary mode and as root in ksh: # gunzip oscommerce-2.2ms2.tar.gz # that seemed fine, then: # tar xvf oscommerce-2.2ms2.tar x (lots of untarring) x ... x ... tar: directory checksum error # Any ideas what's wrong here? Something unusual to untar this file or is it a directory checksum error bad file and if so where can I get a good copy of this file? Thanks in advance for your help! I'd recommend editing on your Solaris (vi) and save copies of files on the Solaris as well. The tar (unix) and zip (windows) distributions are identical source code. package aix tar uncompress compress download 6.0.1 Technote (troubleshooting) Problem(Abstract) AIX tar command is not able to uncompress CI0I7ML_OP6.0.1 media package Symptom The AIX default tar command is not able to uncompress the contents of the OP_6.0.1_Non_Embedded_DVD_1.tar.gz, due to "tar" problems related to long file names included. When uncompressing the .tar file with tar -xvf OP_6.0.1_Non_Embedded_DVD_1.tar.gz the following error occurs: x OP_6.0.1_Non_Embedded_DVD_1/OP_6.0.1_Configuration/Database/UPGRADE_SCRIPTS/InterstageBPM_dbupgrade tar: 0511-169 A directory checksum error on media; -252676160 not equal to 44916. Cause When using AIX tar the package is not able to uncompress its contents. AIX TAR doesn't uncompress files with long names, and OP_6.0.1_Non_Embedded_DVD_1.tar.gz contains several files with long name patterns. Resolving the problem Use the GNU tar utility (gtar) to extract the files from the downloaded installation package. You can obtain this utility from the IBM AIX Toolbox using the link below, since the AIX tar utility cannot process the archive file. http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/power/software/aix/linux/toolbox/download.html Historical Number 00002037 Document information More support for: OpenPages GRC Platform Software version: Version Independent Operating system(s): Platform Independent Reference #: 1514484 Modified date: 2013-03-07 Site availability Site assistance Contact and feedback Need support?
