Control Module Memory Check Sum Error by Spencer Clayton on April 18, 2016 ShareTweetPin P0601 code definition P0601 is a general OBD-II trouble code referencing a fault with the internal control memory. This code may be seen with other ECU codes and various other codes depending on the symptoms. What the P0601 code means The P0601 diagnostic trouble code is set when a p0601 jeep memory check sum error is detected with the internal control module. This is a error internal to the ECU and is found when the ECU performs self-checks. P0601 then causes the Check Engine Light to illuminate and failsafe mode to become enabled until normal operation resumes or the code is repaired. What causes the P0601 code? The most common causes of the P0601 code are: ECU failing or has failed Low voltage to the ECU What are the symptoms of the P0601 code? Symptoms can vary greatly with ECU codes and some symptoms can be very erratic and intermittent such as: Check Engine Light illuminated on the dashboard ABS and traction control systems lights are on Vehicle may not shift properly The vehicle may struggle to stay running or die while running Engine may not start How does a mechanic diagnose the P0601 code? A mechanic will begin by hooking up a scan tool to the DLC port and checking for all codes preset including history and pending code. Next, freeze frame data will be noted for every code. Re: checksum error while trying to read ECU No, but have flashed the ECU twice now with no issues. Re: checksum error while trying to read ECU Ok great to hear you got it sorted, it does sounds like a harness or USB type issue. Did you isolate what it actually was? Re: checksum error while trying to read ECU Nevermind - next read attempt completed. I have unified maps etc and reflashed Re: checksum error while trying to read ECU After disconnecting the ECU and Yosh plugs for inspection, and reassembling without making any changes I have tried to read the ECU with WRT again. This time I plugged into a normal USB 2.0 port on the laptop, instead of the (backward compatible) USB 3.0 port I used yesterday. The read got to about 60% on the first attempt, then gave the error: Unexpected response while reading checksum for Block:12 Pag

On friday I had a management light come on, checked with VAG -COM and found a code 16985 Internal Control Module: Memory ChecksumError P0601 - 35-00[:(] When I tried to clear this it came straight back, I only had the ignition on not engine running!!! The light on the dash has now gone off and the checksum error car still runs fine but it worries me not being able to clear it.[8o|] The car was chipped by APR 2 years ago and I have asked about this on the VAG-COM forum, the only answer coming back being take it back to APR as it is there work that would of caused this. Being under warrenty I took it back to dealer who told me it is over fueling caused by my GFB hybrid dump valve but I'm sure thatdoesn't cause a memory checksum error. internal control module Anyideas would be good. It could just be that its chipped but usualy any of these mods run allong with everything and dont show faults. And your right, over fueling wont cause a checksum error, it would probably pop up 'rich mixture' or 'lambda faults' but if the dealer knows its been modded they probably wont do it under warranty, because if vw ask for the oldecu back to checkwhat went wrongand find out its been chipped they wont pay the dealer for the work carried out. Hope you get to the bottom of it. Back to top #3 boraboy boraboy Just grazing New Members 162 posts Posted 16 May 2005 - 08:14 AM Oh, bugger!!!! Spose as its under warrenty I'll give the dealer another go, luckily I can return it to the standard program and lock it. I'll put the standard dump valve on again aswell as they blamed mine.... I've been lucky with warrenty claims so far, fingers crossed. Graham Back to top #4 DGW DGW Newbie New Members 6 posts Posted 16 May 2005 - 0
put the car into boot mode, flash was successful and car started, I drove the car, came back to my house and shut it off. Now it won't start. I put my friend's ECU in my car and it starts. What can I do? I tried flashing that ECU with Galletto with a stock file, 2 other modified files, and the file I drove it last time with and nothing. The ECU connects to Galletto, flashes success but it won't start. Anyone have any idea of what happened? I know it's not my computer or cable because I flashed my friend's ECU after all this occurred and it worked fine. The checksums in your file are not updated! Seems like you have an error stored in theeeprom now. Sounds typical that you once can drive and for the next driving cycle theengine won't start. I am not sure if the ecu will clear this error after some time whenyou have flashed an image with correct checksums. You could give it a try and flash your orig file, then leave ignition on for several minutes to allow the internal checksumprocess to finish. A complete checksum run inside the ecu needs more than 15 minutes.Tried this and it didn't work. GWerks: Anyone have an idea of what I could do to fix it? setzi62: Just to be sure, because I forgot to say: after flashing with your original you need to firstturn off ignition before then checking wether ecu would clear the error after ignition stayedon for longer time. But most probably you tried it already this way.Nevertheless, I don't think your ECU is done, it just needs to clear the checksum error.Did you try to flash with the NefMoto flasher? I think a successful flash with this wouldalso clear the ecu's checksum error. Tony@NefMoto: You need to flash using the NefMoto ECU Flasher! ;DTwo out of the three checksums are checked by the ECU on startup. The third checksum is only checked every few driving cycles. If you have an invalid checksum error code, the car will refuse to start. The only way to remove the invalid checksum error code is to flash over OBD using the KWP1281 or KWP2
