Have you any more ideas? For server name I am typing (local). If I type garbage I get a different error (53).The error happens after I enter my login name. I used SQL server authentication with sa.If I use NT authentication, I get the same message. I also get the same message if I use an invalid login. Thanks afrika Flowing Fount of Yak Knowledge Nigeria 2706 Posts Posted-11/04/2008: 14:46:28 Try and ping the server.Do you have a firewall ? It's quick & easy. Connection Failed error connecting to MS SQL Server Expert 2.5K+ P: 2,765 Seth Schrock I'm trying to add a data source to my computer through the ODBC Data Source wizard. However, I keep getting an error that says Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers ConnectionFailed: SQLState:'01000' SQLServerError:2 [Microsoft][ODBCSQLServerDriver][SharedMemory]ConnectionOpen(Connect()). ConnectionFailed: SQLState:'08001' SQLServerError:17 connection failed [Microsoft][ODBCSQLServerDriver][SharedMemory]SQLServerdoesnotexistoraccessdenied I'm running SQL Server 2005 and today is my first day using it. I know that the server exists, so I'm thinking that the problem is the access denied part. I have created a test database called "Testing" just to see how to connect to it through Access. I'm using Windows Authentication. I added my connection failed sqlstate username to the logins list and gave it every possible server role and mapped the user to the Testing database. I have turned on TCP/IP connections to allow remote PCs to be able to connect to it. At this point, I haven't been able to find anything else to try. This is 100% new to me. Thankfully, my extremely limited knowledge of MySQL has help a little, but not much. Mar 11 '13 #1 Post Reply Share this Question 2 Replies Expert 2.5K+ P: 2,765 Seth Schrock After trying anything and everything that I could think of, I discovered the problem. When I was selecting the server, it just listed the host name of the server and didn't include the server instance. So now my SQL Server that I'm connecting to is TESTLAPTOP\SQLEXPRESSTEST instead of just TESTLAPTOP. I'm now able to create the data source just as I want it.
