On your home machine, try connecting directly to the IRC port on your server. If you are running linux you can do this with telnet: $ telnet your.example.server 6667 you should get some response from the server (you might have to hit enter first). If that doesn't work, there's probably a firewall involved. Check the server where you are running ircd. What does the output of /sbin/iptables -nvL show for firewall rules? I bet you have a standard 'default-deny' setup, where incoming connections are dropped unless they are going to specific predefined ports. share|improve this answer answered Mar 13 '11 at 21:30 Phil Hollenback 10.9k21845 I got this: telnet: connect to address 50.56.93.249: Connection refused\n telnet: Unable to connect to remote host –Nathan Campos Mar 13 '11 at 22:14 That actually sounds like there isn't a service listening on the remote port. Check your ircd config file and see what interfaces it is configured to listen to, and what ports. You might only be set up to listen on localhost, which is why it works on the server but nowhere else. –Phil Hollenback Mar 13 '11 at 22:49 add a comment| up vote -1 down vote I think I moved my ircd.conf file on accident when trying to touch the MOTD file.. Restored the ircd.conf file, restarted the ircd-hybrid service, and we're good! share|improve this answer answered Jan 29 at 1

Close some other applications and/or reset your Internet connection to fix http://serverfault.com/questions/246935/connection-refused-when-trying-to-connect-to-ircd-hybrid this problem. NO ROUTE TO HOST Unable to connect (no route to host) This normally means you are not properly connected to the Internet. Your Windows cannot find out how or where to find the IRC server. It has nothing to do with mIRC or IRC. Check your connection (reconnect if everything seems fine) and try again. UNABLE TO RESOLVE IRC SERVER This http://mirchelp-undernet.org/servererrors.html means your providers' DNS is broken, the server no longer exists under that name, or you typed its name incorrectly. This has nothing to do with mIRC or IRC. Try another server. CAN'T ASSIGN REQUESTED ADDRESS Unable to connect (Can't assign requested address) This means the IRC server is unreachable for everybody. Most probably the admins have tweaked their DNS records to point to the non-existent IP number 255.255.255.255 to detour a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. Try another IRC server or network. (When they set the server IP address to be 255.255.255.255 you will get the error "Can't assign requested address." When they set it to 127.0.0.1 you will get the error "Connection refused." If they disable the address altogether (set it to nothing) you will get the error "Unable to resolve IRC server.") CONNECTION TIMED OUT Unable to connect (connection timed out) Things can get slow on the Internet. Either when you try to reach a far away server or when connections somewhere in between your Internet provider and the IRC server are broken. Very often you didnt have a (proper) co

It's possible the DNS server you're using (look at /etc/resolve.conf) has those IPs cached for chat.freenode.net, you could try using 8.8.8.8 (google's free DNS) or doing an authoritative lookup

(The server shown is currently online.) Try connecting using the alternate (non-standard) ports – 6665, 6666, 8000, 8001, or 8002. The Hexchat syntax is irc.freenode.net/6665 in the server configuration window, or /server irc.freenode.net 6665 in command line. Even better, try a SSL-encrypted connection – the standard port is 6697, and freenode also accepts connections on 7000 & 7070. Syntax is the same but with +port; e.g. irc.freenode.net/+6697 (as in the topmost entry of your current server list) or /server irc.freenode.net +6697. share|improve this answer answered May 27 '14 at 19:42 grawity 157k17288377 Tried all those... none work :-/ Does it matter how I set the 'login method'?...
