refused SMTP (sending mail) is very spam sensitive .. last thing you want is to be a open-relay. https://www.howtoforge.com/community/threads/dovecot-and-squirrelmail-install-config-trouble.26838/ So an SMTP server needs to be picky on from who it accepts mail. If it refuses mail, blame it on the Server, not on the tool that is connecting to it. If you are using sendmail, http://squirrelmail.org/wiki/MailServerSMTPProblem you need to tell it to listen to to ports other than the localhost: http://www.seifried.org/security/os/linux/redhat/20011031-rh72-sendmail.html If you are using qmail, and get this error: "Command not implemented Server replied: 502 unimplemented (#5.5.1)" Change SMTP Authentication to 'None' in the config (under SMTP Settings) Fedora Core 4 runs Apache under SE Linux settings, so it cannot connect to the mail system (SMTP, IMAP, sendmail). Temporarily disable SE Linux with this: "setenforce 0" and restart Apache. You can permanently disable SE Linux with the instructions here: http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/selinux-faq-fc3/index.html#id2825880 Edit this document | View document history Document last modified Thu, 22 Oct 2009 13:04:03 Search: © 1999-2016 by The SquirrelMail Project Team

I suggest postfix. (apt-get install postfix) Then, you should make sure that you use the `~/Maildir'. If this folder doesn't exist or you gave it the wrong permissions, this is a common error. Make sure you configure Postfix to use it: postconf -e "home_mailbox = Maildir/" postconf -e "mailbox_command = " /etc/init.d/postfix restart If it is still not working, try telnetting into your machine and test it that way. Test SMTP (port 25) Trying 10.0.1.40... Connected to test.freetown.local. Escape character is '^]'. 220 test.freetown.local ESMTP Postfix (Ubuntu) ehlo
