I've seen this topic posted around the web, but there seem to be no answers available. i'm wondering if http://superuser.com/questions/450683/putty-returns-network-error-connection-timed-out anyone has solved it.On 10.5.8, allowing remote network connections should be relatively straightforward. System Preferences -> Sharing -> Remote Login: OnIt has a green light, along with the connection refused following underneath it:"To log in to this computer remotely, type "ssh myname@mycomputer"."Great. So, I ssh to another machine, and type "ssh myname@mycomputer".I get the result, "ssh: connect to host mycomputer port 22: Operation timed out".So what's going on here? I've even tried starting up sshd (ps -ef doesn't show it running), with no luck. Everyone else in network error connection the department can connect to their own machines from outside the network (so there doesn't seem to be a firewall blocking the network and restricting incoming connections), but I apparently can't. Has anyone else seen similar behavior and figured out how to solve it? Thanks! ssh -v -v -v username@destination.address
Compare the ssh debug output from both connection attempts. Assuming the network paths are very similar, you should be able to see where in the connection sequence things go wrong. Also do you have an system preferences -> Security -> Firewall settings that might get in the way? Hel

I can use it from my local library and many other libraries around me (and also from Starbucks, Panera, etc.) and it works. But I tried to use it today from my dad's house the same as before, and I get the error: Network error: Connection timed out. What could be wrong? networking wireless-networking ssh putty share|improve this question edited Feb 2 '14 at 17:19 Eric Leschinski 2,72442642 asked Jul 18 '12 at 22:11 Jeff 156117 @ultrasawblade has a great list of what could be wrong. You'll probably have to get into some specifics of your dad's network setup (i.e. test for some of those problems) in order to get specific help. –JoshP Jul 18 '12 at 22:48 Coincidentally, my campus had a power outage (which outlasted the long length UPS on the target machine) at the same time as my apartment. So when the power outage forced me to SSH in from my dad's for the first time, it also knocked the target computer out. Verizon was innocent (but they're still bad at math: verizonmath.blogspot.com). –Jeff Jul 19 '12 at 2:33 Ack! Lol. Glad to hear it was something simple –JoshP Jul 19 '12 at 2:43 :) glad it worked out for you! –Sandro Dzneladze Jul 19 '12 at 12:15 i found this question today, and then realized that last night i have changed my router firewalls settings, from low to medium.. :) –ADM May 21 '15 at 6:12 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 8 down vote This means PuTTY cannot make a connection to the server. Possible causes: Verizon is blocking incoming or outgoing traffic/TCP connections on port 22, maybe due to the type of plan you are subscribed to or other reason. Your dad's router or 3G/4G hotspot is blocking incoming or outgoing traffic/TCP connections on port 22. You have no Internet connection and/or something has suddenly gone wrong with the TCP/IP software on your system. Your campus is blocking incom
