They are connected via a hub. They talk to each other perfectly. When I try comnnecting using 192.168.0.21 with user name and password I get the first of the above. When I use its name "orca" I get the second of the above. Have fitted new ether net card and the hub is brand new. I had the putty same trouble previously with WIN.ME but suddenly it began to work one day and I know not why? Sometimes I get "no route to host"? that I see come up at iPhone forum sites over and over is problems with connecting to the iPhone via SSH. So I thought I ‘d do a quick post covering some good things to check when troubleshooting these issues. These suggestions may not fix every SSH connection problem, but they should help you resolve most, and will certainly mean you ‘ve covered the basics and most likely causes of a connection failure. In this post I ‘m going to assume that you are already comfortable with the basics of using SSH to connect to your iPhone, and have already got SSH apps setup on both your iPhone and the PC https://winscp.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=396 you ‘re using to connect to it. If you ‘re not comfortable with the above, or need some help with your initial setup, please give my more general How-to post on this subject “ How To: Connect To Your iPhone Via SSH. Ok, so let ‘s talk about what to do if you ‘ve got yourself all setup “ on the iPhone and PC “ with SSH apps and you still have problems connecting via SSH. http://isource.com/2009/05/05/iphone-tip-things-to-check-if-you-cannot-connect-via-ssh/ There are a variety of error messages you can get from SSH clients when connections fail. One of the most common is ‘Network error: Connection refused ‘. I ‘m not going to try to break this up into sections for every common error message “ for that, you might want to see this post that offers some advice along those lines for common WinSCP errors. Instead, the suggestions below should be useful things to try for nearly all errors you ‘ll encounter. Many of them are quite obvious things “ but they are also things that most of us have had at least a few ‘DOH ‘ moments on, and these checks can bring a quick fix when we do. Things To Try If You Cannot Connect To Your iPhone Via SSH: If you get a timeout error, try increasing the timeout setting Make sure SSH is turned on, on the iPhone - Generally the easiest way to do this is to use an app like SB Settings that gives you a GUI interface to toggle the service on and off with. Make sure WiFi is turned on, on the iPhone “ again, via SB Settings or the iPhone ‘s built-in Settings applet. Check that you are specifying the right port in your desktop SSH app (e.g. WinSCP on Windows or Cyberduck on Mac). The por

I've seen this topic posted around the web, but there seem to be no answers available. i'm wondering if anyone has solved it.On 10.5.8, allowing remote network connections should be relatively straightforward. System Preferences -> Sharing -> Remote Login: OnIt has a green light, along with the following underneath it:"To log in to this computer remotely, type "ssh myname@mycomputer"."Great. So, I ssh to another machine, and type "ssh myname@mycomputer".I get the result, "ssh: connect to host mycomputer port 22: Operation timed out".So what's going on here? I've even tried starting up sshd (ps -ef doesn't show it running), with no luck. Everyone else in the department can connect to their own machines from outside the network (so there doesn't seem to be a firewall blocking the network and restricting incoming connections), but I apparently can't. Has anyone else seen similar behavior and figured out how to solve it? Thanks! Compare the ssh debug output from both connection attempts. Assuming the network paths are very similar, you should be able to see where in the connection sequence things go wrong. Also do you have an system preferences -> Security -> Firewall settings that might get in the way? Thanks for the comments. I did try disabling the firewall (and even restarting, since some comments suggested that a restart was needed), but nothing changed.I've done the ssh -v -v -v test, and coming to my Mac the output is very simple. Only three lines, and it stops with the "Connecting to" line (following that line is a timed out line). For the machine where ssh is work, it has those same three lines, and then many more, as the connection
