I'm making SSH connections to it from my PC via Putty. The problem is, sometimes I'm able to login seamlessly. However, sometimes it gives me an error like this: Network error: Connection refused. Then, I dont't change anything, try to login a few times more, wait a while and try again. Sometimes I can log in, sometimes I cannot. It seems pretty random to me. What can

WinSCP needs a SSH or FTP server to be installed at the other end (on the http://askubuntu.com/questions/30080/how-to-solve-connection-refused-errors-in-ssh-connection machine you want to connect to). In particular, you cannot easily use it to connect to another Windows workstation, since Windows does not have an SSH or FTP server included by default. Please refer to FAQ. You are trying to use protocol that the server does not support. Particularly you are trying SFTP/SCP (over SSH), but the server https://winscp.net/eng/docs/message_connection_refused supports FTP; or vice versa. Check selected protocol on login dialog. Note that WinSCP defaults to SFTP protocol, while most other similar applications default to FTP. The server is running on non-standard port. I've seen this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2611734?tstart=0 topic posted around the web, but there seem to be no answers available. i'm wondering if anyone has solved it.On 10.5.8, allowing remote network connections should be relatively straightforward. System Preferences -> Sharing -> Remote http://superuser.com/questions/450683/putty-returns-network-error-connection-timed-out Login: OnIt has a green light, along with the following underneath it:"To log in to this computer remotely, type "ssh myname@mycomputer"."Great. So, I ssh to another machine, and type "ssh myname@mycomputer".I get the result, connection refused "ssh: connect to host mycomputer port 22: Operation timed out".So what's going on here? I've even tried starting up sshd (ps -ef doesn't show it running), with no luck. Everyone else in the department can connect to their own machines from outside the network (so there doesn't seem to be a firewall blocking the network and restricting incoming connections), but I apparently can't. Has anyone else seen similar network error connection behavior and figured out how to solve it? Thanks! Compare the ssh debug output from both connection attempts. Assuming the network paths are very similar, you should be able to see where in the connection sequence things go wrong. Also do you have an system preferences -> Security -> Firewall settings that might get in the way? I can use it from my local library and many other libraries around me (and also from Starbucks, Panera, etc.) and it works. But I tried to use it today from my dad's house the same as before, and I get the error: Network error: Connection timed out. You'll probably have to get into some specifics of your dad's network setup (i.e. test for some of those problems) in order to get specific help. –JoshP Jul 18 '12 at 22:48 Coincidentally, my campus had a power outage (which outlasted the long length UPS on the target machine) at the same time as my apartment. So when the power outage forced me to SSH in from my dad's for the first time, it also knocked the target computer out.
