How to solve 'Connection refused' errors in SSH connection? up vote 50 down vote favorite 14 I have an Ubuntu Server 10.10 32-bit in my home. I'm making SSH connections to it from my PC via Putty. The problem is, sometimes I'm able to login seamlessly. However, sometimes it gives me an error like this: Network error: Connection refused. Then, I dont't change anything, try to login a few times more, putty connection refused raspberry pi wait a while and try again. Sometimes I can log in, sometimes I cannot. It seems pretty random to me. What can I do to solve this? Edit: And Sometimes, Putty gives Network error: Software caused connection abort error after displaying login as: text. I restarted Ubuntu and now I can't network error connection SSH on port 22 from my Windows machine on the same network with PuTTY. The following message appears: Now this is fairly common as I've seen from the dozens of sites that mention it (even here on Ubuntu's forums, but I haven't found the solution in them yet). What I've tried: 1). restart ssh service: Code: /etc/init.d/ssh restart I tried the same thing with sshd but that doesn't exist on my system and can't be located with apt-get -- just mentioning that because I've seen it on a few of the forums I've read so far. 2). make sure port 22 is open in firewall. Code: iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT 3). restarting, and that obviously hasn't worked. Please let me know if you'd like me to post the output from various commands, will do so promptly. I have a laptop with Windows 8.1 on it, and I have connected it to the Pi using an Ethernet cable. I want to SSH in to the Pi, so I have installed PuTTy. I went to the windows command line and typed in ipconfig and looked under Ethernet adapter Ethernet > Autoconfiguration Ipv4 Address to find the ip address of the Pi. I took that IP and entered it under "Hostname(or IP address)" in PuTTy. I gave the name a session, pressed save and open. Now, I am getting the following error: Fatal Error: Network Error: Connection Refused I looked online, but I couldn't find a solution for windows (but there are a lot for Linux). I tried making sure I had the right IP address by trying to ping the Pi (and I can). I read other posts saying the error is caused by the server blocking the connection, but I am not sure how I would go about fixing that. The only thing I can see that looks strange in the command line to me is that there is no default gateway set up for Ethernet. However, I thought that I would need access to the Pi in order to change that. Can someone tell me if there is a step I am missing in my setup that could be causing this error? I'm new to this, so any help is appreciated.
