However, when I run Putty on windows 8 I get a "connection refused" error. I have, to the best of my ability: disabled the firewall double checked port number in putty allowed putty in my windows firewall (I can connect to other servers fine) reinstalled ssh When trying to connect with putty I am using 127.0.0.1 and port 22 (I did not change the port network error connection refused putty windows 10 number on my server from default). I think the problem is that the server isn't allowing external devices to connect to it still but if it isn't the firewall then I'm not quite sure where to look, I'm not the linux Guru I wish I was but I know enough to get by with most things. Additionally, I realize there have been many posts on this connection refused error, however I just spent all day reading through them and I couldn't find anything that looked relevant to the issues I am experiencing networking server ssh connection firewall share|improve this question edited Jul 9 '13 at 17:26 guntbert 6,123112958 asked May 23 '13 at 14:46 michael 1111 First of all its a good idea to verbose the connection to get more details: ssh -v user@host –dhojgaard May 23 '13 at 14:49 can you telnet to it? telnet

Thanks for providing your OS version. Would you also provide the version of Centrify DirectControl you're using (adinfo -v)? For example, in my system $ adinfo -v adinfo (CentrifyDC 5.2.3-429) Connection Refused There are several reasons why you may be getting a connection refused from PuTTY to your system. I'm going to focus on one. It also seems that you chose to deploy Centrify-enhanced OpenSSH. Keep in mind that this is not required for Centrify Express to work (only if you're doing cool things like SmartCard authentication or have very complex AD and want SSO everywhere) CentrifyDC OpenSSH is based on OpenSSH_6.7p1 (this version deprecated the DH group SHA1 key exchange in favor of SHA2; <= this may be the reason why you'

Within Putty, under "Host name", I put "Ubuntu", given this is what I thought it was called when I set up the VM. However, I just get the error: "Connection Timed Out". I also tried putting "127.0.0.1" into the host name within Putty and just get "Connection Refused". Note that I have done the port forwarding for SSH and HTTP within Oracle VM, so I am at a loss as to how to get it running. ubuntu virtualbox putty share|improve this question edited Nov 8 '15 at 23:30 Jamal 1196 asked Jul 22 '14 at 20:40 wickywills 3191411 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 41 down vote accepted VirtualBox will create a private network (10.0.2.x) which will be connected to your host network using NAT. (Unless configured otherwise.) This means that you cannot directly access any host of the private network from the host network. To do so, you need some port forwarding. In the network preferences of your VM you can for example configure that VirtualBox should open port 22 on 127.0.1.1 (a loopback address of your host) and forward any traffic to port 22 of 10.0.2.1 (given that is the internal address of your VM) This way you can point putty to Port 22 of 127.0.1.1 and VirtualBox will redirect this connection to your VM where its ssh deamon will answer it, allowing you to log in. share|improve this answer edited Mar 8 at 13:13 answered Jul 23 '14 at 0:32 michas 11.2k22054 8 Thanks, this worked for me.
