The application tech is on site now moving old forms, software, etc from the AIX to RHEL and wants to use rcp. Solved rcp is not working Posted on 2003-02-10 Linux Networking 1 Verified Solution 10 Comments 9,192 Views Last Modified: 2007-12-19 I have two linux machines that are directly connected to each other by a cross over cable. Both machines are basically connection refused identical because I cloned one off of the other. They are both Red Hat 7.1 running the 2.4.18-xfs-1.1 kernel on an i686. One of the machines I've set to 192.168.1.1 (the host with hostname test1.test), and the other machine I've set to 192.168.1.2 (the client with hostname test2.test). I am trying to run some tests to see the speed of file copy between rcp, scp, and rsync. I've gotten scp and rsync to work, rcp command connection however, rcp is not working for me. I am getting "Connection refused" whenever I try to run the command. I am logged in as root on both machines, and here is what I run from the client machine (192.168.1.2): rcp -rp root@192.168.1.1:/home/backup/* /home/rcp I get: test1.test: Connection refused My /etc/hosts file looks like this on both machines: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 192.168.1.1 test1.test 192.168.1.2 test2.test My /etc/hosts.allow file looks like this on both machines: ALL: 192.168.1.2 ALL: 192.168.1.1 My /etc/hosts.equiv file looks like this on both machines: 192.168.1.1 root 192.168.1.2 root I have been trying to look up resources to see what else I need to modify, but those 3 files seem like the only ones that I had to change. I'm not sure if I'm setting those files up incorrectly or what other issues I might have in why rcp isn't working. I would appreciate the help. 0 Question by:e12ic Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 3 Best Solution byprasadklk It is the pam authentication problem for root, Edit /etc/pam.d/rsh file and change required to sufficient in line: auth required /lib/security/pam_securetty.so After changing it should appear Go to Solution 10 Comments Message Author Comment by:e12ic2003-02-10 I restarted sshd on the host machine (192.168.1.1) and now instead of "test1.test: Connection refused", I get "Permission denied." If you DO show that sshd is running and is listening on tcp port 22, check to make sure there's no firewall rule getting in the way. Again, on the server: $ sudo iptables -L | grep ssh DROP tcp -- anywhere anywhere tcp dpt:ssh Or alternately, $ sudo ufw verbose Status: active To Action From -- ------ ---- 22 DENY Anywhere 22/tcp DENY Anywhere If you do see a rule like one of the ones above, you'll need to fix that. If you don't see any firewall rules in the way and you do see the service running on the server, then it's time to check your workstation, and the network it's connected to. Can
