Discussion in 'Earlier Versions of Windows' started by thoma, Jan 12, 2001. Thread Status: Not open for further replies. Advertisement thoma Thread Starter Joined: Jan 8, 2001 Messages: 25 I realise I've already asked this question of you guys briefly before. But I solved the last problem by formatting the hard drive and re-installing everything. I really don't want https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/263466 to have to do that this time if at all possible. Please has anyone any idea how I can solve my problem on this Fujitsu laptop?? I'm getting exactly the same error message as I had with the previous laptop: 'Windows protection error. While initializing device VKD.' Any suggestions, please, please, please, please, please????? thoma, Jan 12, 2001 #1 Sponsor https://forums.techguy.org/threads/protection-error-while-initializing-device-vkd.26435/ HKEd Joined: Jul 18, 2000 Messages: 221 I've seen this one solved with a scandisk from DOS, so maybe that's the best place to start. From a cold boot, hold down the Ctrl key (Win98) or hit F8 repeatedly after the POST beep (Win95/98) to get to the start mode menu. Select Safe Mode Command Prompt. Then type scandisk /all /surface and press Enter. If any errors are detected, opt to fix them. Once scandisk has done it's thing, keep you're fingers crossed and reboot. But can I please just say that YOU are an absolute LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!! I have spent hours upon hours trying to solve this problem which always occurs on these laptops. I rang Fujitsu, certain that they must have come across this conflict before. They couldn't help me. YOU, in a manner of speaking have saved my life...or at least my sanity. Long may you live in legendary status!!!! Goo

It told me to choose F1 to Run setup or F2 to load default values and continue. I chose F2. After, it device error initializing went to the screen where you choose if you want to start in safe mode, normal mode, etc, even though I did not press F8. I tried to start it up in Normal Mode, but then it goes to a screen that says "While initializing device VKD: Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer." And when I restart my computer it happens all over again athe VKD message comes out again. 0 Advertisements #2 Retired Tech Posted 01 June 2006 - 06:23 PM Retired Tech Retired Staff Retired Staff 20,563 posts This will rebuild the registry and also replace missing or corrupt system filesBoot the PC and keep tapping F8 right after the beep until you get options, select command prompt only, give it a minute to arrive at the prompt with a flashing cursor then type scanreg.exe /fix then press enter, it will run through a few screens then say registry repaired. Press enter then press ctrl + alt + delete keys together to reboot. When Windows has loaded, click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools, system information, tools then run system file checker and replace any files it asks for from the 98 CD then reboot. When it has loaded to the desktop, click start, programmes accessories, system tools to run disc clean up, then run disc defragmenter from system tools 0 #3 Calvin and Hobbes Posted 01 June 2006 - 10:10 PM Calvin and Hob
