of them work just fine, but a couple of them won't let me format them because they are "write-protected." There is no write protection switch on the device. I have exhaustively tried the https://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=28268 following: - Windows format: "The disk is write protected" - HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool: "Device media is write-protected" - diskpart clear attributes readonly: nothing - diskpart clean: "Diskpart has encountered an error: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. See the System Event Log for more information." (The System Event Log only contains the error: The IO operation at logical http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1933637/format-repair-write-protected-usb-drive-errors.html block address 0 for Disk 1 was retried.) - HDD Low Level Format Tool: "Format Error occurred at offset 985,595,904: 1117 - Device I/O error" and hundreds of similar errors - Sacrificing a lamb to the USB gods - Starting in safe mode with command prompt and running format, diskpart, and chkdsk So do all these I/O device errors mean that these USB drives are just totally screwed? Is there any way to get more information about the problem? However since the pc is unable to format the gps's flash memory, it indicates that the flash memory in the gps is damaged. The red circle with the white cross means that the gps's cpu is unable to find any usable o device error software on the flash memory to run. like this 0 Emiliogara Author You can see here how much reputation Emiliogara has received from other members. You will need to download a utility like HDDGURU at this link http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Low-Level-Format-Tool/ Run the utility and allow it to work......it can sometimes take awhile to complete depending on the errors it finds. If it finishes and tells you that it was able to format the device, it will also say you need to partition the memory.....ignore this. However you will need to perform a regular windows format (FAT32) to create the necessary file system on the memory. like this 0 Emiliogara Author You can see here how much reputation Emiliogara has received from other members.
