I have win vista x64,sp2. Toshiba satellite and a Seagate freeagent goflex 1tb external HD. I had been http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f16/seagate-external-hard-drive-device-i-o-error-630057.html using the external for a while. noticed some information wasnt really working properly. I thought I would do a chkdsk. However, I used Tuneup utilities to perform the thorough chkdsk of my external HD, i figured it would find and fix any bad clusters. WRONG. after 20hrs of waiting. I restarted the PC, and now i cant access any information. The external shows up in "computer" I can open certain folders but after a few mins I http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/i-o-device-error-with-external-hard-drive.171517/ cant access anything and i get the I/O device error... ive tried running chkdsk /r just from the PC in a CMD window. It shows a list of 30-50 files that are "unreadable" and sticks on a certain file at around 6% complete every time. Ive tried all of seagates suggestions and other then that everyone else just says to run chkdsk on other forums. I really do not want to loose this information at all costs... any information would be fantastic. thanks for your help in advance. I am traveling in India at the moment. Do you think this is something I might be able to get fixed from a local computer shop, at least licensed for seagate retail? I'm a newbie, but, maybe your hardDrive is unplugged or not well-plugged. Did you have opened your computer recently? 05-31-201209:34 AM Reply With Quote #2 robinb Posts: 248 At a place I used to work at, we had a LOT of external drive caddies fail. The drives inside them were all ok, but the little controller boards failed. So it might still be ok. You can try taking the drive out of the case and plugging it into an internal drive bay. I think I'd try that before doing any desperate like freezing it or any of those other last ditch efforts for data recovery. And first of all, I'd try another cable. My dad had a monitor that had a terrible quality picture, after two repair attempts it turned out to be the VGA cable, not the monitor that was faulty. Whoops. External drives are a good backup, but I'd always recommend keeping your critical data on an internal

Yesterday my PC "locked-up" twice and I had to reboot the PC.After this I tried to access the external hard drive and it doesn't. The Seagate Device Manager software doesn't do any good. The drive is assigned by the system when the external drive is connected. But it takes a long time. Autoplay is searching and searching and finally abandons. In the device manager am able to see the drive. The file system is showing as RAW. Should it be NTFS - not sure? The external hard drive capacity is 120GB and it is showing free space as 117 GB. I do have alteast 50GB worth of data and that is not being reflected. I changed the drive name from I to M and it doesn't help. There is no exclamation mark in the USB controllers. The Safely Remove option does recognize the drive a Seagate. But any attempts to open it or run in Autoplay doesn't work.I tried to access thru MS DOS and it shows that there is I/O device error. Is there any other technique that I can try to access the external drive contents thru my PC.Thanks.
