When I plug it in now it says this needs to be reformatted. I choose no of course and when I try to access the drive its says it can't be accessed because of an i/o disc error. I don't even keep this hard drive plugged in, I only plug it in when I need a file off of it. I tested o device error it on another computer and I get the same problem. My hard drive still had 895 gb free space before when it was working. Anyone know of a way to retrieve my data by any chance? I'm a newbie, but, maybe your hardDrive is unplugged or not well-plugged. Did you have opened your computer recently? 05-31-201209:34 AM Reply With Quote #2 robinb Posts: 248 At a place I used to work at, we had a LOT of external drive caddies fail. The drives inside them were all ok, but the little controller boards failed. So it might still be ok. You can try taking the drive out of the case and plugging it into an internal drive bay. I think I'd try that before doing any desperate like freezing it or any of those other last ditch efforts for data recovery. And first of all, I'd try another cable. My dad had a monitor that had a terrible quality picture, after two repair attempts it turned out to be the VGA cable, not the monitor that was faulty. Whoops. External drives are a good backup, but I'd always recommend keeping your critical data on an internal drive as well. Or two separate exte

I have started the system yesterday and configured it with domain name and server name. At this time I see Small Business server console. I want to take a snapshot with a baremetal backup so that I can configure the server further. I have bought a Seagate Freeagent Goflex 3.0 TB hard drive and set it up. It is a USB 3.0/2.0 drive. My server can see the drive and make directories etc. But when I tried to make a baremetal backup to that drive, the back up starts and go through all steps and just before starting the backup fails with error "i/o error". Being a newbie not sure where to find the logs for this. Dell person tried with the same result. If someone can guide me where to find the logs on the system I can post them. Does server support hard drives of size 3 gb? Does any one face the same problem. Dell put a tape drive for me RD1000 but forgot to load the software. Hence now I am trying to back up to the hard drive. Any Help is highly appreciated. I have resolved the issue by attaching a Seagate Freeagent Goflex Ultra Portable 1.5 TB hard drive, which I bought at Costco today. Now I am able to do backups without any issue. I did two baremetal backups and no errors. In summary wndows SBS 2011 does not backup to 3TB hard drives.
