files from this drive to other drives (same behaviour for file destination on external hdd or another internal hdd). Somehow after numerous restart and re plugging the i/o device error 0x8007045d sata cables, I managed to move all the files out from this drive without any errors. And I did a format, chkdsk at restart and HDtune health check. All seems fine, so I moved the files back to this drive. But after I move it

back, it's giving me the same error again I/O error when I start cut or copy certain files out from this drive to any other drive. eg. I have this folder with about 400 files (anime videos, each file about 200 Mb) which I tried to move it to external HDD, all are moved except for just one. I am able to move this one file to anywhere within the same drive. But when I tried to cut or copy it to another drive, it shows the file copy/move dialogue the request could not be performed because of an i/o error but the process just get stuck, and after a few minutes the I/O error pops up asking me to retry, skip or cancel. When I click retry, it just wait for another few minutes and pops up the same error again. When I click cancel, another few minutes wait and it will cancel. I have also tried opening HD tune health check when trying to move the files to observe the health status. Before I move the files all status are shown as ok, and once I move/copy the files, I see some of the ID starts to fail for a few seconds and then ok status back and forth repeating, (spin up time, start/stop count, reallocated sector count. etc) only until I stop the cancel with another few minutes wait. The weird thing is when I try to play this file from the problem drive itself, it works. It just not allowing me to move or copy this file out of the drive. What could be causing the error? It could be played perfectly directly from my portable hard drive but when I copy it to my internal hard drive, I will encounter an error something like Could not read file, I/O device error, can't complete the request. Error code: 1117 on Windows 7 (The error message is not in the exact words when it http://superuser.com/questions/608530/why-cant-one-of-my-files-be-copied was displayed, because I run a Chinese system. But the gist is there.), when around 112 MB of this file is processed. The file has 249MB in total. And I also tried on Mac, and tried using FastCopy on windows, the same problem occurs. Is there a way to rescue this file? windows-7 hard-drive file-transfer share|improve this question edited Jan 9 '15 at 12:12 Oliver Salzburg♦ 56.3k36185245 asked Jun 17 '13 at 9:17 larryzhao 11516 1 Seems like it's time to run a chkdsk /R and probably replace the hard drive. –Werner Henze Jun 17 '13 at 9:23 Yes, let me try chkdsk /R. I am thinking of replacing it, but I want this file back.. –larryzhao Jun 17 '13 at 9:26 FYI, looking up that error code on UK system you get: "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." you might have some luck googling that. –snowdude Jun 17 '13 at 11:32 @WernerHenze chkdsk /R did the trick, thanks, you may answer it, and I will accept that, for the future. –larryzhao Jun 17 '13 at 13:38 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote accepted Seems like the hard disk is defect and should be replaced as soon as possible. It started off having really slow copy speeds (kept dropping to around 3kb/sec), but my computer could read it and can show me what's on the drive (folders, files etc) however, I could not open them, copy them to the fixed hard drive or copy anything to the external hard drive. Now I plug it in and my cannot copy file computer has a bit of trouble reading what's on the disk, and when it can read it, there are some folders I can't even open (see error message below). I get different error messages from both opening and copying files. For opening files/folders, I get: --- E:\PC Backups is not accessible. The request could not be performed of an I/O error. --- Whilst for a copy/paste job, I get: --- An unexpected error is keeping you from copying this file Error 0x8007085D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. --- I've gone into a couple of PC shops where they told me that they had never encountered this problem before, but might be caused by a bit of dust getting on the disk itself and would suggest buying a new hard drive. I have also had a look at what error 0x8007085D is and it seems that it's a simple disk read error (most commonly due to smudged discs, according to the forums I've seen). I don't mind having to buy a new external hard drive, but I don't want to lose
