It sounds like something corrupted the file system on the external drive. That's why you're getting an Input Output error. If you want to take a long shot, you may be able to mount the drive on a Unix box or try something like the Ultimate Boot CD. Also, you could search for data recovery software, in which I don't have much faith, but who knows? mtg837 Born Posts: 3 3+ Months Ago Well that was the answer I was sort of fearing and expecting as well. After getting it I saw some files of about 30-200 kb with some unreadeble names. I tried to format it but got 'windows was unable to complete the format'. Then tried cmd format. Then it showed about I/O error. I edited its registry to remove writing protection reading some forums. But I failed. Now it is showing without any memory show(like format stopped during process) and unaccessable too. What can I do? It had previously been used for file backup on a now retired computer. My goal is to make a new image of my system and copy of the media drive onto the Elements drive for offsite storage. My current backup drive is newer Elements 1.81 TB USB 3 drive that works without a problem. The computer is a Dell XPS 8700. It is relatively new and runs Win 7 Home Premium. I am having a problem creating the image backup disk on the 2.27 TB Elements drive using the Window 7 Backup and Restore, create system image function. The process fails with two messages. One of the backup files could not be created (0x8078002A)The request could not be performed because of an i/o device error (0x8007045D)I have reformatted the drive, deleted the volume and formatted. It is GPT. I have tried USB ports on both the back and top of the case and used different USB cables. Unfortunately the solution requires you to reformat the HDD, so you'll have to backup all the data you have on that drive, before you do that. Here's the problem described in detail along the the solution: Error: 0x8078002A occurs when backing up to a 2.5 or 3.0 TB drive in Windows 7 Backup and Restore.Let me know how this goes and if it fixes the problem for you.Boogieman_WD PooneilJan 7, 2016, 11:08 AM Thanks for the quick response. The redirect in the provided link doesn't resolve and leaves me with a blank page. However a google search for the link title got me on the correct WD knowledge base page. I downloaded and ran the WD Quick Formatter on the drive. The backup still failed So I ran the formater again, noticed and selected the "Most compatible" option. The image backup is now underway.Thanks. Can't find your answer ? Ask ! Get the answer Boogieman_WDJan 8, 2016, 10:20 AM Good job on figuring that one on your own. As for the link, I've just tried it and seems to be working, perhaps there was an issue of some sort. Nonetheless, the important thing is that you have everything up and running.Cheers!
