If the connection doesn't appear to be the issue, connect the external device to a different computer to see if the same error occurs. If so, the problem is with the device itself, the connecting cable or connector, or perhaps in the device driver.TipIf a Device I/O Error involves a DVD, CD-ROM or other type of removable media, the problem may be the medium itself. You should also verify the medium elsewhere, just to be sure it isn't the cause of the error.Step 5Another common error, especially on devices just installed or attached to a computer, is the DMA or PIO settings. Check the documentation for the device you suspect is causing the problem to verify what its transfer mode settings should be.Typically, DMA is turned on automatically during installation for those devices (DVD, CD-ROM, external hard disks) that support it. However, during the installation or as a result of a system fault, DMA or PIO may not be configured correctly.Open the Device Manager by clicking on Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and clicking Device Manager. how can I fix it? Answer: The error message is caused from Windows trying to use a transfer mode that your CD/DVD drive cannot recognize. A more common error https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-to-fix-an-io-device-error message that is seen when this issue arises is: "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." However, both error messages yield the same solution. To resolve this issue, you will need to change the transfer mode in your IDE channel properties. Here's how: Go to Start Right click My Computer Select Manage from the http://www.5starsupport.com/xp-faq/1-95.htm resulting menu In the Computer Management window, select Device Manager In the right pane, click to expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers Identify your CD/DVD drive in the expanded menu and right click the appropriate drive Select Properties In the Properties windows, click the Advanced Settings tab In the Transfer Mode box that represents your CD/DVD drive (typically Device 1), open the drop down menu and select PIO Only Click OK and exit all windows. If this does not resolve your issue, then you will need to go back using the above procedure and change the Device 1 in step #9 back to "DMA if available". Then, change Device 0 to "PIO Only" in the Transfer Mode box. Latest firmware 1.08 and latest Plextools installed. This morning I ripped a CD with EAC. Gap detection was unbelievably slower than usual (over 30 minutes for 20 tracks) and ripping speed was approx 3x instead of the usual 10x, in secure mode.Since then, I device error have been unable to read a CD-rom or a DVD.Insertion of an Audio CD caused the system to crash. Upon reboot I was able to play the CD using foobar2k, but not WMP. EAC also recognized the Audio CD.Trying to browse a CD in Explorer returns the following message after many painful seconds:QuoteF:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.F: being my PX716's drive letter.I have googled for this o device error problem and could not find any efficient answers. You should carry out the self-test as being described in the drive's documentation to be sure.Good news ... since you live in the EU, you can call french Plextor support and go for an RMA with on-site collect & return ... normally, you'll recieve a new or refurbished drive in less than 7 days. Was afraid that would be the case. Thank you JeanLuc for your answer.Pretty scary... I only used it for 4 months... Ripped less than 100 CDs... Could it be that this particular CD damaged the drive ? It was a "bootleg" CD, probably not the best quality. xmixahlx Hero Member Joined: 19 December, 2001 Posts: 1,390 Logged "I/O device error" with my PX716 Reply #3 &ndas

I am able to backup my Dvd's with no problems at all, I can play the backup dvd's with no problems. The only problem that I am having is that I now continue to keep getting the message "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" whenever I try copying from the DVD (the backup DVD) on to my Hard drive. I get this message every single time. I am using the Plextor 712A dvd burner and I have upgraded to the latest firmware which is 1.05. I am running XP Home and I have downloaded all of the latest updates. I can not figure out for the life of me what is causing this error. I have even tried changing my Plextor to the Primary Master and placed my Samsung 52X as the Primary Slave.. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks . FYI, my harrd drive letter is set up as E, I went into the properties on each CD and DVD rom drive and set changed the default hard drive from C to E based on what others had recommended. I am sure this is an XP setting. Thanks ahead of time for any help.
