Recently, it has started showing errors and I really need to recover the data. The laptop gives the sound notification http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/297713-32-external-hard-drive-error when I plug it in, and also the "remove device safely" option gets enabled. But the drive does not get displayed on My Computer. I checked the device manager, and the hard disk is shown The disk management shows the hard disk 1 as unknown and not initialized. I tried initializing it, but it shows I/O device failure. I had the most luck with the software GetDataBack for NTFS (I'm using version 4.33). It was able to recovery about 50-60 % of the small files I cared about, mostly smaller than 200mb size files. Anything greater than that was not recoverable--

If you do not have another computer available, try a different disk to make sure that the problem is with the computer and not with the original disk. There are several solutions that you can use to troubleshoot and try to fix an I/O errors. Try these solutions in the following order: Solution 1: Make certain that all cables are connected correctly If the drive is an external drive, make sure that the cable that connects the computer to the drive is functioning correctly. If the cable fails, the drive will not work correctly. If you have another cable, try to use it, and also try to attach it to another (USB) port.
