I just received a new laptop at work with Windows 7 for the operating system. However, all of the other desktops at work are on Windows xp except for one computer which is also on Windows 7. When I go to map the network, I error 6118 am only able to discover the other computer with Windows 7 and none of the others. As I checked with that computer and the rest of them, only those with Windows 7 can see each other and nothing else as is the same for the ones with xp on them (can only recognize xp devices). To add to my frustration, I was previously working on my personal laptop error 6118 win that also uses Windows 7. However, I was able to map all of the devices on the network on that laptop even though it was using Windows 7. The last bit of information I can offer is that when I go into my Norton Security Software, I am able to see all of the devices on the network through Norton to adjust the security settings while sharing files with my computer. I thought there may be a trust setting or firewall blocking me from being able to share with the xp devices so I shut down Norton completely and tried without any security at all and I was still unable to come up with anything other than the other Windows 7 machine. Can anyone offer me any advice? Reports: · Posted 6 years ago Top ispalten Posts: 6259 This post has been reported. If you never changed the network name on W7, the 'new' default is HOME. XP's had a default of 'WORKGROUP' I recall? They must both be the same for Networking to work. Run from a command prompt on all machines NET CONFIG WORKSTATION, you'll see something like this : ==================== C:\Users\Irv>net config workstation Computer name \\IRV-XPS435 Full C
