At home (VPN server side), I have my Windows 7 configured to receive incoming connections via PPTP. Port is forwarded this server on my Virginmedia superhub (a Netgear modem/router for my fibre optic BB). On client side, I simply VPN connect to my home network and it worked like a breeze for 3 months. Suddenly anywhere I am and on any PC, I cannot seem to log on to my home network via VPN anymore. The VPN client is definitely connecting as it reaches the stage of verifying username and password, then it hangs and finally gives the error 806 which is of this description: http://www.howtonetworking.com/vpnissues/error806.htm I tried most trouble shooting areas including setting up the server Vpn on another PC, switching off all firewalls etc. I even rolled back the VPN server to an old restore point. It seems according to the error, internet protocol 47 GRE is being blocked somewhere. I called my Virgin service provider but they tell me they have not done anything and they wont support any issues I have with VPN. What is this protocol and how can I check if it is bei

All of them should periodically connect error 806 to central office via PPTP VPN. Until recently there were no problems, but now Vista is suddenly unable to connect any more. I am getting error 806: The VPN connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be completed. The most command cause for this failure is that at least one Internet device (for example a firewall or a router) between your computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow GRE protocol packets. I have error 806 vpn checked the router (Zyxel Zywall 35) it has both port 1723 and GRE protocol 47 configured OK. Otherwise I would have problems with XP clients, too. Or is GRE important only for Vista? I havent changed anything - the connection was just lost one morning and I am trying to get it back since then without success. I have tried Microsoft KB 926170 and 929857 instructions, since the error first manifested as 721, but no solution so far. All clients are on domain, but the domain server is on the host that is available only throught VPN - I guess this might be the problem... 0 Question by:igams Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google Best Solution byigams Since the question has not been closed yet I can now report how I managed to solve the problem: The source of all problems was the firewall after all. But not the firewall on the router or the firewall Go to Solution 4 Comments LVL 3 Overall: Level 3 Message Expert Comment by:The_R0CK2007-11-17 Because the other XP clients are connecting, I think the problem must be with the client device running Vista. There is no specific difference between XP and Vista as GRE as used by both for PPTP. You do not need to be on a domain or have AD access to connect to a VPN. Therefore, I suggest reveiwing the client. Vista (in my opinion) is not yet very stable for VPN

So I have a VPN access to a network. but it doesn't work when I use my phone as a hotspot, but only on a specific machine, a Fujitsu T730 (Atheros AR2987). It runs a fully updated Windows 7 Pro. On a "normal" router it works just fine. The hotspot works on other machines, it's only on this one it doesn't work. I've tried Android and iOS, and the IP ranges are not conflicting with each other. The error I get is 806, saying this: Error Description: 806: The VPN connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be completed. The most common cause for this failure is that at least one Internet device (for example, a firewall or a router) between your computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) protocol packets. If the problem persists, contact your network administrator or Internet Service Provider. Possible Cause: PPTP uses GRE (Generic Route Encapsulation) protocol to encapsulate the VPN payload in a secure manner. This error generally comes when some firewall in path between client and server blocks GRE Protocol (i.e. IP protocol number 47). Possible Solution: Allow both outgoing and incoming Protocol 47 (GRE) on any in between firewalls. If that is not possible, deploy SSTP based VPN tunnel on both VPN server and VPN client – that allows VPN connection across firewalls, web proxies and NAT.Click to expand...
