use PPTP. I have enabled PPTP and GRE on firewalls on both the server and client. What I think might be the problem is my router. It is a Netgear WGR614v10. I have read that the SPI firewall needs to be disabled. But I do not see this firewall in the how to allow gre protocol for vpn connection settings. What I see is a Disable Port Scan and DoS Protection option. But when I disable this it still doesn't work. But I'm not even sure if this is the problem. I feel like I have exhausted all my options. I added and configured the role, allowed PPTP traffic through the firewall https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/550780-setting-up-vpn-server-error-806 as well. When attempting to connect from another Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7 box, they both get stuck on 'verifying username and password' and eventually end with error code 806. I tried the same PPTP connection from a Macbook and it worked! Any idea on what I'm doing wrong? I am going to assume you have port 1723 open on your firewall correct? You say the Mac connects fine. What are you using for your AV software? I know you have it disabled and your firewall disabled, but sometimes firewall instances in AV software are still left running. Does the firewall on the other network allow this type of traffic?
