I error copying file or folder windows 10 have an external 500GB Seagate drive that is recognized on the computer when I plug it in, however when I try to copy error copying file or folder the device is unreachable or open the files I get an access denied error message: Error copying file or folder, access denied. I am currently running a disk check on the drive. What could be the problem accessing these files? If they were created on another computer there may be an Ownership problem. Simply right click the highest level folder and see if there is a "Take Ownership choice. If not you may have to do it the hard way giving your user permissions through the security tab in Properties. I will look into that. It appears the person who used this drive before I got it used it with Vista. I am using it with XP. If you know what his user name was on the Vista system a last resort to try might be to create that name on the XP computer. Is it XP Pro or above or Home? Reports: · Posted 4 years ago Top Enthusiast Posts: 566 This post has been reported. XP Pro. Reports: · Posted 4 years ago Top Xhi Posts: 6298 This post has been reported. You sdhouled be able to do some things with Ownership then. Home did not have that capability. Reports: · Posted 4 years ago Top Enthusiast Posts: 566 This post has been reported. Ok. In the middle of a lengthy chkdsk at the moment. I will try the ownership route after. Thanks Xhi. Denied on Windows XP and how to take ownership By Brajeshwar on 24 Sep 2005 in Technology In a recent hard disk crash, I had to do a restore from my back-up. Some http://brajeshwar.com/2005/file-access-denied-on-windows-xp-and-how-to-take-ownership/ of the files on a back-up drive was somehow avoiding me with an "Access Denied" even though I was logged in as the Administrator. I looked around and finally got the solution on how to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows. Here are the simplified steps. Log on to the computer with an account that has administrative credentials. If you are running Microsoft error copying Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab. If you are using Windows XP Professional, you must disable Simple File Sharing. Right-click the folder/file that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties. Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the error copying file Security message (if one appears). Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab. In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and object check box. Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message: You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folderName. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control? All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes. Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents. That's it.
