I have spent much time Googling, but the one program ("Unstoppable Copier") that http://superuser.com/questions/508679/how-can-i-copy-files-from-a-scratched-cd-dvd people recommended, did not to the trick as it keeps choking on the same file despite a setting of "Fasteset Data Recovery", "Maximum Retries 0" and "Undamaged Files First". They work by removing a thin layer of the plastic on the side that contains the data. It probably won't make much difference for very heavy scratches though. –James P Nov 21 '12 at 15:32 Is this a manufactured DVD or a burned disc? –Keltari Feb 15 '13 at 2:13 @Keltari: What would you do differently with those? Till now I've always treated them almost the same when it comes to polishing/resurfacing (just took a little more care with the latter). Was that wrong? –Karan Feb 15 '13 at 2:22 The difference is where the scratches are. Burned disks can be g
Source File or Disk" Error Recently, I was working with a client who had a strange problem. He was trying to copy some files on his computer and ended http://helpdeskgeek.com/help-desk/fix-cant-read-from-the-source-file-or-disk-error/ up getting this odd error message: Can't read from the source file or disk. What's odd is that he could easily play the file in Windows without a problem. It was only an issue when he tried to copy the file. After playing around with it for a while, we tracked down the problem. In this article, I will mention the different reasons error copying why you may get this error message and what you can do about it. File Size Limits The first thing you want to look at is how big the file is and where you are copying it too. For example, if your file is a huge 5GB movie file, then you won't be able to copy it to an external hard drive that is error copying file formatted with FAT16. A FAT16 formatted drive can only support up to a 2GB file. FAT32 can only hold up to a 4GB file. Most external hard drives and flash drives are formatted in FAT16 or FAT32. Check out this cool site that breaks each format down for you and the max file sizes: http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm For whatever reason, when you try to perform a copy like this, you can sometimes get the "Can't read from source or disk" error message. It doesn't make much sense, but that's what happens. Possible Bad Sectors If you're using an external drive, you could possibly have some bad sectors on the hard drive, which is causing the problem. In this case, you should scan the hard drive using a tool like chkdsk. If there are any errors, it will go ahead and fix them. If you hard drive is going bad, then you may have to simply get a new hard drive. If you're trying to copy from an external drive to your local computer, then try plugging in the external drive into another computer and see if you get the same erro
