Both drives are formatted NTFS. When I http://superuser.com/questions/374335/unable-to-copy-folder-from-desktop-to-external-hard-drive try to copy and paste the folder, I get an error message pop-up, 'cannot copy file:' with the title header 'error copying file or folder'; no explanation is given as to why the folder can't be copied. windows-xp hard-drive external-hard-drive file-transfer share|improve this question asked Jan 4 '12 at 0:00 user701510 2034512 Can you copy the file to a different location (not to the external drive?) –Serodis Jan 4 '12 at 0:04 Yeah i agree with Serodis, try copying it to either a different external drive, or another location on your local disk (or another local disk if you have one). It almost sounds like it might be an issue with one of the files in your copy, or with your source disk. but this will help us determine that. –Paperlantern Jan 4 '12 at 0:18 I got the same error when I tried to copy the folder to another location on my local disk –user701510 Jan 4 '12 at 0:32 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted Most likely ther
Magnificent! Guest Join Date: Jan 2001 Windows XP: "Error Copying File or Folder" I'm trying to backup all of my folders/files http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=404969 on my C drive, but some seem to be copy protected. When I try to execute a drag and drag copy of a 100 MB folder to a new external HD, Windows http://www.dummies.com/computers/operating-systems/windows-xp-vista/how-to-move-a-file-or-folder-in-windows-xp/ refuses, telling me "Error copying file or folder." When I rightclick, hit "properties" and uncheck "Read only" under Attributes, then apply and save, this doesn't work either. For some reason, some error copying of the folder just can't be copied. I'm using Windows XP. Any ideas? (Yes, I realize this is the slowest way possible to transfer the contents of my C drive to my G drive. Please clue me in to a faster way.) Carnac the Magnificent! It can be downloaded as part of the Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools. Note that you don't actually have to run the installer; the file can be expanded with any zip program. Running the command robocopy c:\SourceFolder g:\DestinationFolder /MIR /R:3 /W:3 /LOG:c:\copylog.txt will make an exact replica of the source folder in the destination folder. If it is unable to copy any files it will retry 3 times (/R:3) with a 3 second interval (/W:3) and then go on. It will create a detailed log of what happened (/LOG:c:\copylog.txt). The most likely reason for the errors is that you're trying to copy files which are in use. Number View Public Profile Visit Number's homepage! Your first option is to click and drag the file to another folder in the Folders pane on the left side of the window. Your second option is to right-click the file and choose Send To. Then choose from the options shown in the submenu that appears. If you use right-click and drag, you are offered the options of moving or copying the item when you place it via a smart-tag (a little icon that appears). And if you want to create a copy of a file or folder in another location on your computer, right-click the item and choose Copy. Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the location where you want to place a copy, right-click, and choose Paste or press Ctrl+V. 4Click the Close button. You can find the Close button in the upper-right corner of the Windows
