And yes, I know what they are up vote 2 down vote favorite 1 I am trying to migrate my Users files and Program Files from my C:\ Drive to my D:\ Drive. So far, I have dragged all the files over, and replaced all the junctions, but I am still left with those three NTUSER.DAT files for the registry. I was wondering if it was possible, and also how I would go about moving these files over to my D drive? I am assuming that when I add the junction for "C:\Users", it will still work properly, but before I can test and see, I need to move them. I don't care whether I break anything. I have nothing on my computer, I just reinstalled today so I could take a shot at this migration. Would I be able to do it with a Linux LiveCD? I haven't tested this yet, but I'll go download one if someone thinks it's possible; I just have really slow bandwidth(126KB/s) so I'd rather know if that'd work first before I tried it. Also, a few more related questions: Does anyone know if the junction to D:\Users from C:\Users will actually work properly with the registry? Also, is there anything else I have to be careful for beside junctions, to make sure everything works identically, besides the fact that they're moved to a new drive? windows windows-registry users share|improve this question edited May 13 '12 at 2:53 0xC0000022L 2,48122558 asked May 12 '12 at 23:51 Nathan 11112 If you have a Windows installation CD, you can boot to that CD and press SHI

My old computer suddenly got a corrupted user profile. When trying to log on, I get an error saying "Windows could not load the locally stored user profile, etc". I fixed this http://superuser.com/questions/423819/how-can-i-move-ntuser-dat-and-the-similar-files-and-yes-i-know-what-they-are twice with chkdsk /f /r, but that no longer works properly. Don't know if I should make a new profile or not, so here is my question: Can I replace my ntuser.dat with the one located in "WINDOWS\repair"? It was last modified a few months ago (when I reinstalled Windows) Will I lose my settings entirely? Also, for some reason, my http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1976288/corrupt-ntuser-dat-replace-copy.html "Documents and Settings\Administrator" folder does not exist (if it ever did). EDIT - My ntuser files are "ntuser.dat" and "ntuser.dat.log". I renamed them to .old just in case. So now they are "ntuser.dat.old" and "ntuser.dat.log.old". More about : corrupt ntuser dat replace copy Chicano 13 January 2014 03:42:11 The ntuser file at WINDOWS\repair is from the default user, what you need is a "ntuser.backup" located in your user profile folder.. unhide files and folder from the Tools > Folder Options > View > "Show hidden files and folders" and "Hide protected system files (recommended)... you should have at least one backup of ntuser. First rename or move to another folder the old ntuser.dat (which you have already done) and next rename the ntuser.backup file to ntuser.dat, and restart the computer. The user account should be restored to the date of the ntuser.backup which means the settings you have changed since that date will be lost. This will change the account registry data so backup personal files to prevent possible loss.... m 0 l Can't find your answer ? Ask ! Publish

Since your registry for your account is inuse while you are logged in, you cannot copy error copying that file. You need to logon under Account #1 to copy Account #2's profile into Account #3's profile. That is, you need an arbitration account to copy accounts atop each other and where the arbitration account is not of those you are copying. You don't copy any of the arbitration account's files. You copy the files for the account(s) under which you are NOT logged in. You could use, for example, error copying ntuser.dat the Administrator account to copy your account's profile (My Documents is a path under %userprofile%). -- __________________________________________________ Post replies to the newsgroup - Share with others. Windows needs this file (badly) to load the user profile. Best leave this file alone. If you want to copy documents etc., just copy only the "my documents" folder and leave all other stuff in documents and settings alone. Windows needs a lot of these files, and it expects it to be where they were. (it is possible to change the location for the entire document and setting stuff, but you'll spend tons of time editing your registry). Log in as the new temporary user. Copy these files from your old account to your new account (not the temp one you are logged in as).The copy should then complete and you can log in as the new user and delete the temporary account.Let me know how you get on.Thanks.Gavin.
