Hey, i just solved this with a pretty simple solution, which should work on all machines. The Problem in all cases is the Windows File Locking or that the Steam Service/Installer does not release the files. More detailed explanation The method is simple: You update steam yourself, not via patcher. You need a nonworking Steam already installed for the registry keys and the Service! Then you patch it on your own. There are three ways obtaining the required files: 1. You can download it here (link below) 2. You can ask a friend to send their steam install to you (don't copy steamapps folder!) 3. You can create a clean patched Steam Installation with a VirtualMachine (thats how i solved my problem and thats where the linked steam download comes from) When you have obtained the patched Steam Directory you simply copy it over your nonworking steam directory. Make sure you have the ownership of the directory (Tool to take Ownership) Make sure you have the rights for the Steamfolder and it is not Read-Only. If a program is using the directory you can find it with one of these tools: http://processhacker.sourceforge.net/ http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896653.aspx Here is the current update only (2012/08/16): https://rapidshare.com/files/1253987..._2012-08-16.7z http://netload.in/dateiEwvNDUPY1F/st...2-08-16.7z.htm (mirror) Virus Total report for the file: https://www.virustotal.com/file/9ffa...is/1345096460/ Download the archive, it contains only the 4 files, that changed with the last update. Overwrite the files in your steam folder and your steam should be up to date. The Problem with patching will most likely occur next time you want to patch again, since this is a workaround (can't edit thread title) and not a fix. If you don't fix the compatibility issue, you will have to update manually again next time. I don't know why the steam updater causes so much issues. Here is a ridiculously list from Steam itself, which programs Steam has problems with. https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...9828-SFLZ-9289 (contains like every virus-scanner that exists lol) I for myself was not able to fix my own compatibility issue. So the t

When I click the Steam icon, it opens the "Updating" bar, which sits at 0%. Then, the app closes, a second Steam app instance opens, and the error pops up with this exact text: Steam.exe (main exception): ERROR: copying SteamNew.exe to Steam.exe failed, Win32 Error 32 "The process cannot access the file because it is being used http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/79517/is-anyone-having-the-cannot-copy-steamnew-exe-to-steam-exe-problem-on-steam by another process." I've restarted my computer normally and in safe mode, and there don't seem to be any processes legitimately tying up the app. I know I'm not the only one with this issue, as I've seen the question popping up here and there. Does anyone have a solution that doesn't involve deleting all of my game data? I'm on limited bandwidth so I can't afford to download everything again steam share|improve this question edited Aug 4 '12 at 11:00 Private Pansy 9,0831052104 asked Aug 4 '12 at 4:46 xyroclast 41116 Could you explain the problem in more detail? –BlueRaja - Danny Pflughoeft Aug 4 '12 at 5:24 When I click the Steam icon, it opens the "Updating" bar, which sits at 0%. But this error copying normally won't work. Some programs -- games especially -- do allow you to copy their folders over and run the program. Other programs specifically designed to be "portable apps" will also be able to do this. Why Do Programs Require Installation? When you install a program on Windows, it appears to only install to a specific folder, generally under Program Files. For example, Apple's iTunes software installs to C:Program Files (x86)>iTunes by error copying steam default. In a simpler world, you could copy the iTunes folder to a new computer and run iTunes from the folder without any additional work. However, it isn't this simple. Programs actually scatter their data all over the place: Registry Settings: Many programs save settings in the Windows registry. These settings may be scattered all over the Windows registry -- for example, there may be several registry keys for program settings, other registry keys for context menu options, and keys that make the program the default program for certain files. If any of these registry keys aren't present, the program may display errors when you try to run it. Other Program Folders: Certain programs also install other software that they require. For example, iTunes installs the Apple Application Support application, among others. If Apple Application Support isn't present on your computer, iTunes won't run. Apple Application support installs to its own folder and has its own registry settings, like any other program. Windows System Files: Some programs dump DLL files and other files into the Windows system directory and won't run if these files aren't present. System Services: Many programs install Windows services that they require. For example, Adobe Flash Player installs an Adobe Flash Player Update service. While you could copy the Adobe F
