I am trying to upgrade the IOS on my 2501 it says it has 8 MB of flash and dram. ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 5.2(5), RELEASE SOFTWARE BOOTFLASH: 3000 Bootstrap Software (IGS-RXBOOT), Version 10.2(5), RELEASE SOFTWA RE (fc1) Router uptime is 23 hours, 42 minutes System returned to ROM by power-on System image file https://www.safaribooksonline.com/library/view/cisco-ios-cookbook/0596527225/ch01s07.html is "flash:c2500-p-l.120-8.S" cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision A) with 8192K/2048K bytes of memory. Processor board ID 01524423, with hardware revision 00000000 I am upgrading it with c2500-i-l.121-24 which is under 8 MB. However when I try to grab it from the tftp I get a: %Error opening tftp://192.168.1.9/c2500-i-l.121-24 (Not enough space) anyone have any idea? Anyway, before you do that test your TFTP setup with a small file; you may end up xmodem-ing if you remove your old image and after that discover that you can't TFTP... telnet session, it is strongly recommended to be directly connected to the router using the console port. The reason is that if something goes http://rakeshunni.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-to-upgrade-ios-on-cisco-router-with.html wrong during the upgrade, it might be necessary to be physically located next to the router to power-cycle it. Moreover, the telnet connection will be lost while the router is rebooting during the upgrade https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18242143 procedure.A rolled cable (usually a flat black cable) is used to connect the console port of the router to one of the COM ports of the PC.Once the PC is connected to the console error copying port of the router, you need to open Hyperterminal on the PC, and use the following settings: Speed 9600 bits per second 8 databits 0 parity bits 1 stop bit No Flow ControlNote: If you are getting any garbage characters in the hyperterminal session, this means that you have not set the hyperterminal properties properly, or the config-register of the router is set to a non-standard value for which error copying tftp the console connection speed is higher than 9600 bps. Check the value of the config-register using the show version command (shown in the last line of the output) and ensure it is set to 0x2102 or 0x102. It is necessary to reload the router for a configuration register change to take effect. Once you are sure the console speed is set to 9600 bps on the router side, you should check the hyperterminal properties as above .Booting ProblemsOnce you are connected to the console port of the router, you might notice that the router is either in ROMmon or Boot mode. These two modes are used for recovery and/or diagnostic procedures. If you do not see the usual router prompt, you should follow the recommendations below to proceed with the upgrade procedure installation.Router boots in rommon mode, and the following message appears when you issue dir flash: command.rommon 1 > dir flash: device does not contain a valid magic number dir: cannot open device "flash:" rommon 2 >When you see the above error message, it means the Flash is empty or the filesystem is corrupted. A Xmodem console download procedure using ROMmon may then be necessary.Router boots in boot mode, with the following mess

That got me thinking, at home I only use my 1700 for internal LAN routing, however if this IOS sorts out the issue with ADSL WIC's and 21CN, I am wondering if I can get this working on my BE connection at home (as before the issue was that ADSL WIC's didnt like ADSL2+ or 21CN connections and you had to buy H-WIC's). However I have run in to a problem, after I backed up my config, I tried to update my IOS with this file I got from work, and I keep getting the following even though I have erased flash memory. Basically saying that there is not enough space. This particular Cisco 1720 does not have an expansion slot for more memory to slot in, unless you can buy an adaptor and use one of the slots that the wic's go in to?
