When I try to copy and paste the folder, I get an error message pop-up, 'cannot copy file:' with the title header 'error copying file or folder'; no explanation is given as to why the folder can't be copied. windows-xp hard-drive external-hard-drive file-transfer share|improve this question asked Jan 4 '12 at 0:00 user701510 2034512 Can you copy the file to a different location (not to the external drive?) –Serodis Jan 4 '12 at 0:04 error copying file or folder the requested resource is in use Yeah i agree with Serodis, try copying it to either a different external drive, or another location on your local disk (or another local disk if you have one). It almost sounds like it might be an issue with one of the files in your copy, or with your source disk. but this will help us determine that. –Paperlantern Jan 4 '12 at 0:18 I got the same error when I tried to copy the folder to another location on my local disk –user701510 Jan 4 '12 at 0:32 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted Most likely there is a problematic file, or problematic portion of the disk that is causing this error then. i would suggest running a chkdsk on the machine, which might fix a problematic file issue. And MIGHT be able to correct a minor disk error. How to run Chkdsk from My Computer or from Windows Explorer Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check. Click Properties, and then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed, Use one of the following procedures: To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start. To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start. To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors che

I had some trouble getting this machine to boot and was getting errors or can't find system files. It sorta fixed itself and I did a disk scan and the computer works but I can't move files. Is there something missing still or what? I get cannot copy error message Perry #1 Perryg114, Nov 7, 2011 Aluvus Platinum Member Joined: Apr 27, 2006 Messages: 2,913 Likes Received: 0 All files? Do you have a diagnostic CD you can boot to and scan it with? Intermittent boot errors and file access errors may be early signs of a failing drive. #3 MrChad, Nov 8, 2011 piasabird Lifer Joined: Feb 6, 2002 Messages: 16,633 Likes Received: 5 Sometimes if usernames have been deleted or changed the system that controls the user ID's will lock out access to files. There may be some way to get around this. Maybe as system administrator you can copy the files. XP can be kind of aggravating about this. Might look at the flle and folder propreties. Maybe try to open the folder for sharing or something like that. I know I have a habit of storing everything important under My Documents. Could be also that someone simply deleted a few system files or some kind virus rewrote your system files. Maybe just replace the system files. Sometimes you can go back to a previous save point and fix things like this. I have never tried this but you could try a repair install. You have to have an install disk or image to do this and Admin Rights. It might also be possible that some ini file inside of windows XP is pointing to another folder to misdirect the operating system. If I was a virus I might just rewrite or replace some system files. #4 piasabird, Nov 8, 2011 Last edited: Nov 8, 2011 VirtualLarry Lifer Joined: Aug 25, 2001 Messages: 33,891 Likes Received: 115 easiest way is just to boot ubuntu. it copies files from ntfs volumes without worrying about ntfs p
