to write on how to root Samsung Galaxy S2 in Ubuntu Linux because its galaxy s2 root been over 3 years since its release and there are already Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4 in market. But it was only recently when I decided to root my Samsung Galaxy S2 after my contract with SFR was over. At least now I won't be violating the warranty from the manufacturer as its over 2 years now for my phone. The other reason why I am writing this article on rooting Android phone is that I did not find any good articles that could teach a beginner to easily root an Android smartphone on Linux. I followed the steps mentioned on XDA forum, but I felt the need of improving the article with clear steps and proper screenshots and hence I came up with this article to show you how to root Samsung Galaxy S2 easily in Ubuntu Linux. How to root Samsung Galaxy S2 in Ubuntu Linux The tutorial was performed on Elementary OS Luna and Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 running on Jelly Beans (Android 4.2.1). But these steps are generic and with a little modification, can be followed on any other Linux distribution and any other Smartphone with any other Android version. Prerequisites: Here are some of the prerequisites to root an Android phone on Ubuntu: A USB data cable to connect your phone to computer A computer running any standard Linux OS with internet connection (to download some files, mentioned later). The procedure may seem a bit long to you, but trust me, it is not. Its really easy to root your Android phone and it won't take you more than 10-15 minutes to follow the complete procedure. Steps are detailed so that even a beginner can easily root the phone. Step 1: Find the Kernel version on your phone First thing first. You need to find which Kernel version your smartphone is currently running. On your phone, go to Settings-> About phone. Look closely for Build number. On Android: Settings->About phone-> Build number As you can see in the picture above, the build number for my Samsung Galaxy
PMHi all, sorry if this has already been answered but all the posts I've read seem to have files that, annoyingly for me, correspond with their partitions. Odin as bricked my phone twice, it just won't work, even after all the helpful suggestions I http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/archive/index.php/t-7620.html received from the members on this forum, (thanks.) So now I want to try hiemdall as I am told it is much more reliable. I have downloaded Heimdall 1.3.1 for windows 7 32bit. I want to flash the litening rom but when I extract the http://www.friendlyarm.net/forum/topic/541 tar the files that I get are: Factory fs, disc image file Modem.bin, BIN file zimage, file (type just says file) When I try to put factoryfs in that partition heimdall comes up with a message that it expects a rts file.? Modem is error failed pretty straight forward, but what kind of file is the zimage is it an actual zimage file to go into that partition or does it go somewhere else? I would really appreciate your help as this has me stumped. Thanks. Richardj01-16-2012, 02:57 PMI've never used Heimdall myself. Doomed is the man you need to speak to. I know he has used it so may be he can help. Doomed01-16-2012, 05:02 PMBugger it, Just wrote out this hole post and push the wrong button and it all went do typing error failed to it out again:( Doomed01-16-2012, 05:15 PMNot sure how Identical the windows version is with Linux, or the difference between the SGS and SGS EyeEye (I think the SGS EyeEye may use more files) Grab the firmware that uses odin that you need. Then This is the really really hard part - Extract that file, Click on the Flash Tab. Add your Pit file first. Then click on the Add button. Select the file type from Partition Name, then Browse. Choose the file. Then click Add again. This is how the files go, if you haven't worked it out yet FactoryFS > factoryfs.rfs Kernel (zImage) > zImage Param.Ifs > param.lfs IBL+PBL > boot.bin Secondary Bootloader > Sbl.bin Cache > cache.rfs Database Data > dbdata.rfs Modem > modem.bin Once you have added all the files, I usually have SLB2, Recovery and EFS left over, but you may have files for them. Click Remove, on the file you haven't added. Put Phone into download mode, connect to PC, then press start. cookoospite01-16-2012, 08:58 PMThanks Richard. Doomed you saved me typing a PM and apologizing for bothering you. :) Think I'm been thick! From what I have read you ask heimdall to detect the phone, save what it finds and put that as your PIT? If not then what PIT do I use and where do I get one from? Most tars I have extracted don't have one. Also please take another look at the files above; is it gonna cause me problems that factoryfs isn't a rfs file and what about the 'zimage' that simply says 'file' under t
wanted to update to the latest kernel and root image found on this website. I downloaded them but when I go to load the zImage with supervivi, I'm told that the zImage file is too big: Enter your selection: z USB host is connected. Waiting a download. Length of file is too big : 2517028 > 2097152 Failed downloading file Effectively its true, its 2.5 Mb as opposed to the kernel partition which is only 2, so I tried to manually resize the partitions with supervivi's "part" command. Although I create a 2.6 Mb partition, upon trying to load the zImage, I still get the same error... Can anyone help me? thanks a mil Paul mindee 2010-02-19 13:46:22 hi, you have to update the bios in NOR flash first. the latest bios is supervivi-0945 regards mindee Paul 2010-02-22 00:17:23 Hi, sorry but this doesn't work. I've downloaded the supervivi_20091110 from the download section and j-tagged the 128 onto my mini2440. When I connect I see [i] Version: 0945-2K But when I upload the latest zImage file I still get the same error Enter your selection: z USB host is connected. Waiting a download. Length of file is too big : 2517028 > 2097152 Failed downloading file Is there a different version of supervivi somewhere I'm missing? Or is the -2k on the name an indication of the kernel partition size? Thanks a lot Paul Vikas 2010-02-22 05:50:00 Paul, Is it ok for you to use SD CARD for booting? Installing u-boot and loading uImage from SD CARD has worked for me. My kernel is also hugh becoz i have added, ext3, ACM, SYSFS, NTFS etc? Though I have not tried putting uImage in flash, I dont think that will be a big problem. With you boot you can easily change your environment and partitions. Regards, Vikas Paul 2010-02-23 07:16:53 Actually I guess I can... But I need the full functionality of the new kernel + camera modules etc. In other words I would love to run the default os + fs of the sd. I've converted the new kernel image to uImage from zImage, that was ok. Now I need to get the fs onto the sd card. How can I access the files inside the img file? Can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks Paul nils 2010-02-23 11:50:05 unyaffs for yaffs(2) images. Otherwise mount it with -o loop. Booting a root-fs from SD-Card is very very slow... A full blown gentoo needs about 4 minutes from power up to login. A Debian takes about 3.5 Minutes... skip2816 2010-02-23 12:07:37 Hi Paul, try first to shrink the kernels size. In the default configuration are good reserves. What you can drop: nfs, chinese code page, if you do not use modules uncheck this too. These things bring good savings
