Pentium D 64 bit system (checked Debians site and it said this was the right version for Intels architecture despite debian grub error 15 the AMD name).Tried a number of fresh installations from auto default to advanced and still getting the grub error 17 every boot.I have two hard drives. One (the master) is IDE and is ntfs ubuntu grub error 17 formatted with files on it I want to keep. It shows up I believe as hda.The Linux drive is an SATA drive and has default partitions (in most recent fresh install I made the new Linux root partition only 133 GB but it is still the main and first primary partition on drive two). The Linux drives root part shows as SDA and the partition number 1 contains

Filesystem type unknown
Partition type 0x7

Press any key to continueI know when installing other Linux systems I had to change the grub boot loader location from mbr to the main drive or had to change where Grub installed but as it is Grub is at least loading, it is not Grub2 just standard Grub.Could someone suggest what I`m doing wrong, I`m a newb but I`m guessing that it is trying to mount the wrong partition and maybe I just need to edit something?I have tried using a Linux rescue cd that detects and boots any found os, it finds the install and when I choose to install it the screen just goes black and my tv/monitor says there is no signal so I can`t edit that way. I am using a sabayon live dvd to type this, any help much appreciated as I decided to go for Debian after trying Ubuntu and Sabayon because of crashes etc with those and heard Debian is more stable. Thanks for any help, at moment I have no working os so hopefully someon

I have an "old" notebook where I've installed Windows XP and then Ubuntu 8.04 - everything http://askubuntu.com/questions/156474/grub-error-17-and-18-grub-rescue-how-to-boot-again worked well for a long time. After the kids played with it (i.e. I have not seen what happened), I couldn't boot anymore. Grub simply said Error 17, and nothing else. After several Error 17 failures, the error changed to Error 18 - and this is the error it shows now. What have I tried? I tried several Linux LIVE CD's and DVD's I have: Ubuntu 8.04, Kubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 11.10, Fedora 11, etc. - none of them is able to start, in all modes and options I tried (I have not manually edited the commands, but tried the provided options). I can't use the Live CD OS, and I can't install them either. This is important: it is ok to erase all HD contents! It is ok to format, repartition, lose all HD data - no problem. In most of the Ubuntu flavours, including the 8.04 CD, the initialization stucks, showing repeatedly the following error messages: ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 ata3.00: BMDMA stat 0x25 ata3.00: cmd 25/00:08:e5:a5:50/00:00:12:00:00/e0 tag 0 dma 1024 in ata3.00: status: { DRDY ERR } ata3.00: error: { UNC } I also have tried the Windows

To be simply put, it’s a boot loader package from the GNU Linux project. It’s the common and reference implementation of a multiboot Linux https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSaTAMB-Y4g system. It allows you to choose which operating system or specific kernel to boot into.In this article, we’ll be looking into figuring out some common grub errors and hopefully, work out a fix for them. Repairing grub error a broken Grub 2 bootloader: There are tons of us here who broke their grub thanks to autoupdates through apt or similar. Hopefully, this will allow them an way to fix their system without reinstall.Grub now features an advanced rescue mode, truly a godsend for people who somehow messed their MBR tables up.You want to trigger that and get into grub. Then execute the commands below to get back into an working desktop grub error 17 first.lsset prefix=(hdX,Y)/boot/grubset root=(hdX,Y)setls /bootinsmod /boot/grub/linux.modlinux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sdXY roinitrd /initrd.imgboot The X and Ys are to be filled in with your own HDD information. If you only have one HDD, it’ll be X=0, Y=1 and so on. At this point, you should atleast be able to boot up normally. You’re almost done. sudo update-grub sudo grub-install /dev/sdX Execute those two commands, replacing X with the partition your linux is installed on. For me, it was ‘a’. Voila! You’ve fixed your broken ‘auto-updated’ MBR records. Fixing grub error 17/15 Grub error 17 is one of the most common error messages that you’re likely to encounter using the Grub bootloader. The root cause behind it is a messed up partition table disk order. To fix this, grab a live cd and boot into your desktop.Execute the following: sudo fdisk –l You’re likely to get something like the following: Disk /dev/sdb: 750.1 GB, 750156374016 bytes255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 91201 cylindersUnits = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytesDisk identifier: 0x000dc2a4 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System/dev/sdb1 1 1275 10238976+ fd Linux raid autodetect/dev/sdb2 1275 91074 721306624 fd Linux raid autodetect/dev/sdb3 91074 91201 1022976 82 Linux swap / Solaris Partition table entries are not in disk orderIf the bolded line exists, you’ve just found your problem.Fixing this is easy.
