Everything i've found on google search and tried i cannot get to fix the problem. Basically, my girlfreind has a laptop sitting around that isnt working and I thought i'd try fix it. I have a fair understanding of computers, but have never had anything to do with using bootable cd's, partitioning, using prompts/terminals and what not. Its a Dell laptop with Vista basic. From the very limited information grub error that I know about it, in a fit of rage (as our lovelys do) threw it at her EX boyfriends head (got him too haha). After that, It would not boot, so she got someone to install linux and ever since then has come up with Error 17. I did run a diagnostic on it and it came up with error code 2000-0146, whether that has anything to do with it I do not know. I have a damn small linux cd to boot the computer grub error 17 up with to try and find the problem, but all the information i have come across is a bit complex for me. So if I can get some help and someone start from the beginning rather then just throwing random words and prompts at me that would be great. This can be (1) a wrong partition has been selected, or (2) The booting instructions were inappropriate (say using instructions for Linux to boot a MS Windows.) I don't know if you still have Vista which can be booted by Grub by the following steps. (a) In the Grub screen don't select a system to boot but get a Grub prompt. If you see a graphic screen press "esc" to change it into a text mode. In text mode press "c" key to get a Grub prompt. (b) You ask Grub to tell you what it sees in the 1st hard disk (hd0) by Grub command Code: geometry (hd0) . From it the partition with ID type 7 is ntfs so the first one of ntfs partitions would be Vista, Lst say is it is the 1st partition 0 known to Grub as (hd0,0) because Grub counts everthing fr
