The computer is an Acer https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477430 TravelMate 240 but the hard drive died some time ago so I've been booting off a USB harddrive, because the computer's BIOS doesn't support USB boot, I'm using the PLoP Bootmanager on CD (http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager.html) to chainload GRUB from the USB drive. GRUB legacy has been working fine like this for months. Now when I chainload GRUB 2 from GRUB legacy I get the following error: error: out of disk Failed to boot default entries. Press any key to continue... When I press a key the message just repeats. In order to boot and access the GRUB legacy menu, I have to do a CTRL+ALT+DEL. Please tell me if you need any more information to complete this bug report. i get an "Error Loading OS" message. for now, i have no intention of dual booting this machine. i've https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub/+question/46766 tried various suggestions to rewrite GRUB to the MBR, but to no avail. can't even get GRUB to find /boot/grub/stage1. any help would be greatly appreciated as i've been banging my head up against the wall for the last two weeks (blew a power supply, spent a day figuring out that not reconnecting the supply to the metal chassis grub error was causing ground bounce issues and i couldn't even boot from the CD, etc). i've got a BSEE, so i have a basic understanding of the principals and worked in unix/linux environment for years, but not as a sys admin, and am really lost here.
