Grub Error 21 External
install to an external USB hard drive. This person already had Debian Linux installed on their local hard drive and was attempting to do an install of Ubuntu to an external USB hard drive. During the Ubuntu USB hard drive installation process, Grub was accidently moved from the internal hard drive to their external hard drive, rendering the original Linux system unbootable without the external drive plugged in. When attempting to boot from the original Debian Linux system, they would encounter the Grub Error 21 shortly after the Grub 1.5 boot process. The good news is that the fix to repair Grub on the original system was quite simple and is illustrated below: Reinstalling or fixing Grub after error 21: Boot into the original Linux system with the external hard drive still installed (or you can boot from a Live Ubuntu CD). Open up a terminal and type sudo su Type fdisk -l and locate your Linux boot partition from the list Example: sda1 or hda1 Type grub-install /dev/sdx or grub-install /dev/hdx to reinstall or repair Grub! Reboot and test! My notebook has lost all portability because it cannot boot into Windows without the external hard drive attached (and the http://superuser.com/questions/284462/laptop-gets-grub-error-21-when-turned-on-without-external-hard-drive-w-linux external hard drive is not portable). It gets GRUB error 21, because I believe it tries to load the master boot record from the external hard drive, in other words, I'm brought to the GRUB menu without problems when the external hard drive is attached during power up. I want to make my notebook portable again, even if it means removing the Linux partition from the external hard drive. I thought I could just remove GRUB so I installed EasyBCD but it only shows Vista in the Windows bootloader. windows linux external-hard-drive grub bootloader share|improve this question edited May 17 '11 at 0:42 studiohack♦ 10.8k1672108 asked May 16 '11 at 23:14 Dennis 147111 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted When you install Linux dual-booting with Windows, the Linux installer installs GRUB (the bootloader itself) on the same drive as Linux, allowing easy configuration even if you are not mounting the other drive. But, to prevent you having to make BIOS changes, it changes the MBR on the drive with Windows (the bootable drive) with a small 'stub' program that points to GRUB. What's happening is that all the drive in th

Now when I boot my laptop (external HDD removed), I get this: Code: GRUB Loading stage1.5. GRUB loading, please wait... Error 21 I don't get this. I never touched anything with my internal drive. Well, maybe. When I was reviewing what partitions the installer was going to format, the swap partition for my internal drive (Fedora) was set to be formatted even though I did not specify this. I figured that wouldn't cause any problems. Also, Fedora never used to show GRUB loading at all. Screen was blank until Fedora starting loading. Maybe this means that this is a copy of GRUB from my BackTrack disc? Also, I ran 'fdisk' to look for anything suspicious and under /dev/sda1 (internal drive, boot partition) it says "Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary." Please, please help. I have a half-completed research paper on this drive and LOTS of homework and about 70 O'Rielly books. 03-27-2010 #2 devils casper View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message View Articles Super Moderator Join Date Jun 2006 Location Chandigarh, India Posts 24,776 Installer of Backtrack has installed its GRUB in MBR of Internal disk. When you unplug External disk, GRUB couldn't locate its conf files and throws error. Fedora's GRUB Menu is hidden by default and thats why it doesn't appear at startup. You can remove hiddenmenu option in grub.conf file to make it appear.

First of all i am a newbie in the matter of Linux. Today I installed Suse 11.1 on my external USB-Harddrive. On my laptop is WindowsXP Pro running. In my BIOS is now selected: "boot from (internal) Harddrive". And as long as my external USB-Harddrive is connected I get every time the selection menu from where I like to boot, I can either select Suse or WinXP and everything is running fine. But when my external is disconnected I get the "Error 21" ! I was already looking through the Web how I can fix that problem, as it seems I could use my WinXP installation CD, but the problem is thats at home (~10.000km far away) and so I can't use it! Are there anytoher possibilities to fix this problem? It would be great if anyone could help me. Thanks a lot! ciao Sebastian Reply With Quote 30-Jan-2009,18:38 #2 smpoole7 View Profile View Forum Posts View Blog Entries View Articles Parent Penguin Join Date Oct 2008 Location Birmingham. AL Posts 848 Re: Error 21 Error 21 means, "can't find the disk." Boot loaders like Grub and LILO only install a little runt loader on the bootable drive. That contains a pointer to the next stage. In your case, it sounds like the next stage was written onto the external hard drive. Reconnect the external hard drive and boot into Opensuse normally. Run Yast (System Configuration), enter your root password, then select System -> Boot Loader. See what your "boot loader installation" currently shows and post it here. In fact, if you don't mind, go ahead post what it shows for menu entries. The more info, the better. The good news is, this can be fixed. Despair not!
