I've had this problem with Vector and others before on my machine, but Mepis? NEVER! Downloaded the new RC2 -- checked the md5 sum, burned 2 different disks @ the usual speed (1/2 capacity) -- CANNOT get grub to work. I tried reinstalling grub, reinstalling Mepis, reburning...everything short of redownloading. Every time i get error 17. This is taking far too long...any thoughts? Mom's computer is a P-III-800. I am in the grub error 17 process of showing her linux to get away from the slowness and problems of Windows XP etc. While she has been on vacation in England, I upgraded her harddrive from 40g to 200g and made her windows partition 75g. I did all of the windows type maintenance and made sure everything was working. I installed Antix-M8.5 with a 2g swap at hda2 and a 60g Linux ext3 partition at hda3. I had grub installed on MBR hda with default choices. I rebooted and got a grub error 17. I get to this point with a Mepis 8.5 install, and I tried making the hda2 partition the linux with swap at hda3 with the same results. After research, I found that I can re-establish the XP boot by fixing the MBR with the Win sys disk. After more research, I tried the following on a non-booting antix install. I booted off of the CD, opened a terminal, found that there was a /mnt/hda3 directory, Code: Select allmount /dev/hda3 /mnt/hda3
chroot /mnt/hda3
grub-install /dev/hda The last command would not work. I looked in /dev and there is no listing for any harddrive -- No hd? or sd?. I believe that /dev should list the harddrives as hda, hda1, hda2, hda3 since that is how the drive is partitioned. The /dev of the Livedisk shows the hda dr
bdfosterSeptember 5th, 2008, 12:45 PMI have one drive with (really) 149GB on it, and I wanted to experiment with Kubuntu. I did my experimenting, then I was stupid and deleted that partition on my Ubuntu installation using GParted. Since Kubuntu was the last OS that was installed, that is where Grub pointed to. I have five partitions on this one drive. It tries to boot to an HP Recovery partition setup at the factory. HP Recovery Vista Installation Swap File for Linux Ubuntu Hardy Unpopulated FAT32 (this is where Kubuntu was installed) When I boot, it goes to Grub, tries to start, then gives me the Error 17. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this? I've been all over the forums trying find someone with the same scenario. ronnielsen1September 5th, 2008, 01:02 PMhttp://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-24113.html Here are the steps: 1. Boot your computer up with Ubunto CD 2. Go through all the process until you reech "[!!!] Disk Partition" 3. Select Manual Partition 4. Mount your appropriate linux partions / /boot swap ..... 5. DO NOT FORMAT THEM. 6. Finish the manual partition 7. Say "Yes" when it asks you to save the changes 8. It will give you errors saying that "the system couldn't install ....." after that 9. Ignore them, keep select "continue" until you get back to the Ubuntu installation menu 10. Jump to "Install Grub ...." 11. Once it is finished, just restart your computer Crafty KissesSeptember 5th, 2008, 01:02 PMTry SuperGRUB to repair the bootloader > supergrub.forjamari.linex.org caljohnsmithSeptember 5th, 2008, 02:04 PMRonnielsen1's method might still work, but it is not necessary as there is a simpler way to restore Grub. Just boot your Live CD, open a terminal, and do the following: sudo grub grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 [should return your Ubuntu partition in the form (hdX,Y), use that:] grub> root (hdX,Y) grub> setup (hdX) grub> quit That's all it should take, but if for some reason you get any errors or have any problems, let me know. ronnielsen1September 5th, 2008, 02:41 PMMepis has an excellent tool for repairing grub from the livecd that works o
