I changed hard drive and did a fresh install of Jaunty on new drive. Have searched the forums but haven't found anything that works yet. I am dual booting with XP. I did a mbrfix and XP loaded fine, but when I tried reinstalling jaunty I still get error 17 on restart. Any help appreciated. The install is on a desktop computer with four hard drives, two SATA and to IDE. On one SATA is the original XP install and the other SATA I added is Jaunty, the two IDE are for storage. I have had other versions of Ubuntu on this computer before but those were on an IDE drive and worked fine. I have tried running Code: sudo grub grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 grub> find /grub/stage1 the first appears to work and the second gives Error 15: File not found Adv Reply May 1st, 2009 #3 sparkey7t View Profile View Forum Posts Private Message First Cup of Ubuntu Join Date Apr 2006 Beans 7 Re: Grub error 17 on Jaunty install Solved with supergrub Adv Reply May 1st, 2009 #4 maxkool View Profile View Foru
Joined: Apr 30, 2009 Messages: 1 Likes Received: 0 Trophy Points: 0 I am a Vista 64-bit user and I wanted to give Ubuntu a spin because I have heard alot of great things. I downloaded the Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit version (i heard the 32 bit version was more stable and better supported) and installed it to a partitioned part of my laptop's HD so that I would be able to dual boot Vista and Ubuntu. It worked like a charm. To orient things nicely, and to ensure I could easily get into Vista to get to my import files and applications for school, I used EasyBCD 1.7.2 in an attempt to make Vista the default boot OS. I copied https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1143528 the Menu.lst file from Ubuntu over to the EasyBCD NeoGrub and went to reboot my computer. Vista still works fine, but Ubuntu wont boot. Initially I have the choice of booting Vista or going into the NeoGrub booter, and once going into the NeoGrub booter, I have the original 3 Ubuntu boot choices, the regular one, the recovery kernel, and the memory test, and none of them work. I get an error 17, saying that the files cannot be found. https://neosmart.net/forums/threads/9-04-jaunty-dual-boot-cannot-find-ubuntu-file-error-17.3792/ From there, the only thing I can do is go back to Vista... I can provide you with the information I have. I am new to this stuff so please bear with me. My harddrive was original partitioned into two parts for Vista, one where I could keep my program files and one where I could keep my data files. To install Ubuntu, I used the Disk Manager to shrink the Data drive by approx 58.59 Gb to install Ubuntu. (I followed these exact instructions from apcmag: http://apcmag.com/how_to_dualboot_vi...rst.htm?page=2) When I went to look at my partitions again after the problem occured, I know that Ubuntu is installed on the partition /dev/sda4 where 56.15 gb of the original shrink went to /dev/sda5 and 2.44 to /dev/sda6 I can also provide you with my Menu.lst file: # NeoSmart NeoGrub Bootloader Configuration File # # This is the NeoGrub configuration file, and should be located at C:\NST\menu.lst # Please see the EasyBCD Documentation for information on how to create/modify entries: # http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD # menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8) # grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8), # grub-md5-crypt, /usr/share/doc/grub # and /usr/share/doc/grub-doc/. ## default num # Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. GRUB loading, please wait... Error 17 overnight, the message was still there. it wasn't going to boot. i reinstalled jaunty and my dual boot was working again. the windows xp partition was unhurt. all the data was still there, unchanged. we lost data in the ubuntu partition, but heard about "remastersys" and tried it. i successfully make a remastersys disk. i actually (naively) thought i'd never have this problem again. about 2 months ago, once again, receiving the exact same error 17message as above. i booted ubuntu live cd and gparted called the ubuntu partitio

Both machines are running jaunty on ext4 file systems. Both machines were dist-upgraded from intrepid on ext3. Booting from Live CD and fsck gave no errors on the ext4 partitions. On one machine i installed a new jaunty in a new ext3 partition, after that the new boot menu had an entry for the previous non working jaunty-ext4 installation. I can start that 'old' version now. So the reinstalling of grub might be a solution. I am trying to reinstall grub on the second machine now. I keep you informed. Sorry, i don't have no further information, but i found similar messages from other users greetings Ralf Tags: ext4 grub jaunty Edit Tag help Ralf Naujokat (ubuntu-ralf-naujokat) wrote on 2009-04-01: #1 Forgot to say, both are 64bit desktop versions of Jaunty beta. After some google i found that: http://mapopa.blogspot.com/2009/01/grub-voodoo-error-no-1324-and-how-do-i.html I followed his method and the problem was solved. Short summary: - Boot with Live CD (i used USB-boot) - open a terminal and do $ sudo su # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt # mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev # mount --bind /dev/pts /mnt/dev/pts # mount --bind /dev/shm /mnt/dev/shm # mount -t proc none /mnt/proc # mount -t sysfs none /mnt/sys # chroot /mnt /bin/bash ; this step was missing # grub-install /dev/sda --root-directory=/ --recheck My partition was /dev/sda4, but that should make no difference. After that everything was fine again. greetings Ralf Ralf Naujokat (ubuntu-ralf-naujokat) wrote on 2009-04-01: #3 I am checking out the differences between /boot/
