Grub Error 25 Disk Read Error
from menu, but OK from grub shell Date: Thu, 19 May 2005 08:24:03 +0100 I've created a CD with grub on, & I get the menu OK, but trying to actually boot gives me 'error 25: disk read error'. Hitting 'c' for the command line and typing the commands in the grub.conf verbatim (below: root, kernel & initrd) followed by 'boot' works though. Chaining to the hard-drive copy of the config file ('configfile (hd0,4)/grub/grub.conf') gets the menu OK again, but has exactly the problems. Why might there be a difference? default 0 prompt 1 splashimage (hd0,4)/grub/splash.xpm.gz timeout 4 title Linux root (hd0,4) kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 initrd /initrd.img -- [neil fnx ~]# rm -f .signature [neil fnx ~]# ls -l .signature ls: .signature: No such file or directory [neil fnx ~]# exit Follow-Ups: Re: grub: disk error 25 from menu, but OK from grub shell From: Jeroen Wunnink [Date Prev][Date Next] [Thread Prev][Thread Next] [Thread Index] [Date Index] [Author Index]

The problem was despite device.map showing the devices were mapped to (hd0), (hd1) and (hd2) they were infact mapped to (hd0), (hd2) and (hd3) which became apparent when running the geometry command at the grub CLI. This explains the unable to read disk error as there was no disk mapped to (hd1) though i still have no idea why the device.map and actual mappings were inconsistent. Hi, I am having difficulty configuring windows to work correctly with grub and am currently getting Error 25: Disk Read error. I have 3 HDD's all with NTFS partitions on them, one is bootable with XP on it and another has at the start also has ubuntu and swap partitions

I hit 'return' and it brought me back to the initial solaris/ttya/ttyb selection, I selected oracle solaris and tried to continue but it just seemed to stall for a few minutes before returning me back to the grub error 25 3 options again. Apparently this is linked to a Bug 6513165: "Error 25: Disk read error", when booting from and external usb dvd device. Description ============== snv_50 starts loading GRUB from the USB DVD device, but fails the open of the /boot/grub/menu.lst file on the USB DVD, and enters GRUB command line mode. Any attempt to read files from the USB DVD (e.g. cat /
Posts: 12 Grub and disk issues Yesterday i was using my computer as i normally would, then it freezes, turn it off, turn it on... boom grub error 17(i have windows 7 and archlinux dualbooting for reference)so, i headed to the arch wiki,i got archboot running on a usbpen, it takes a life to boot, a lot of read errors from my harddrive ( i will post some of them later for reference )i enter the command line,i do just like the wiki says:i tryfdisk /dev/sda and the the extra fix writeit tells me there's nothing wrong with the disk order.then onto fix grub:root (hd0,1) -->(my linux root is on sda2)and it gives me Error 25: Disk read error, and this prevents me of going further ( i think )i'm pretty clueless how to solve this, i also tried Super Grub disk, didn't detect anything linux related, i almost can boot windows but hangs and reboots.I am already on the mindset that i lost everything i would appreciate any help. The best way is to install GRUB in the MBR and let it handle the booting of all OSes on your system. And don't start swapping around HDs in your BIOS, if you have multiple disks. The Arch wiki has very clear and concise instructions on how to (re)install GRUB from scratch if you need to. Got Leenucks? :: Arch: Power in simplicity :: Get Counted!
