What happens is I get a black screen with "Read Error". To circumvent this error, booting up with the USB connected, GRUB loads up completely fine and off I go. I don't even have to manually boot up the USB. I have tried two solutions with no luck. sudo grub-install sda Automatic Boot-Repair Neither solves my problem. Fresh boot-repair log Few things to note: I've just added a 3TB hard drive recently and reinstalled absolutely everything. However, http://askubuntu.com/questions/384436/grub-read-error-without-usb-connected-13-10 the problem I am having has existed on my last installation, too. Just saying this in case someone makes the relation and this information helps. Ubuntu is on an SSD Windows is installed on a my second hard drive, so Grub isn't detecting it. I haven't solved this yet, if you guys notice that in the log. While I understand that this may appear to be a duplicate question, no solution they give has been successful. I hope that this changes the fact. Edit: It's quite late now. Had to go into BIOS and disable Quick Boot. Don't have any understanding of why that broke it, but it worked. share|improve this answer answered Dec 1 '13 at 17:15 Gilgamesh 352214 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. Now I am having a problem to boot WinXP through GRUB. Whenever I try to boot WinXP I see a "GRUB Read Error" after the menu consisting of different OS. But I am able to boot Fedora properly. I tried to use the GRUB command prompt and the command "chainloader" but to no use. I gave the right parameters for chainloader to boot WinXP but still having the same problem. I used the Fedora 8 boot CD and went to rescue mode to change the GRUB options. I used the following commands $cd /mnt/sysimage $chroot /mnt/sysimage $grub-install /dev/sda ####--> Used fdisk -l command to get the /dev/sda $exit I have no bootable WinXP or any other lower Windows CD to boot into recovery console and use "fixmbr" and "fixboot" commands in the DOS prompt. I don't know what to change in /etc/grub.conf file. My C: drive which contains windows is in "sda2" and linux is in "sda9". Still the problem is not solved. WinXP is the default boot option and linux is the root set in my bootloader. WHat could have been my problem? Any solution to this? I am just a beginner in linux and I am not aware of much of linux commands. All these stuffs were browsed from Google. I need to atleast boot WinXP so that I could use the disk management and try to reinstall the linux properly. I would be glad if I ca
